It LOOKS like the size of bar they use to pull the bead over the rim. Anyone that's mounted tires knows this bar. Slightly curved, flat, 1 to 1.5 inches wide

Nothing out of the ordinary. Weird stuff can happen at just the right angle.

I made him hold the bar or "spoon" up to the gash and it looks exactly like what caused it. My brother is an ASE Master tech and he told me the machines can bind the spoons and do that. But who really knows. This shop has been good to and I've spent a ton of money there so I came to a middle ground with them. I was really looking to hear if anyone has had a similar damage from a shop.

depending on the tire machine..the one I use at work has a soft plastic head and the bar we use has a rubber/plastic cover. it's VERY hard for it to damage a wheel, let alone take a chunk out of it. Unless the guy used the bead breaker and was a complete knob

Yup, saw the damage but didn't see where. Your correct.
It just looks smashed down and appeared to be roughly the right size

Some tire machines now are fully automated. We no longer use a "pull bar" but the new machine ( Corgi ) is twice as easy to royally fuck up a wheel

What exactly are you looking for at this point? You had your concerns, shop answered them, others have had wheels damaged at shops...not a new thing. So what's the burning question that remains???

Hope my Methods don't fall apart that easily. That's a pretty disappointing paint finish on there.

It looks to me like the bar caused it... I will say this though, that my local shop does a lot of business and hence they work fast. My Off-Road TRD wheels had chips near where the lug nuts are. I suspect they were chipped with the impact driver. When I go in for work now I always address the tech by name and mention that my wheels (TRD bead locks) are in excellent condition. Don't chip them. Seems to work.

I was looking for someone to say it's possible for this to happen at the shop or a tech to chime in and say he's accidentally done it. Really there isn't one, just conversation now I guess!

Shit happens. Just the spot that's damaged is unlikely the techs fault...Just how the tire machines work

Yes. I 100% feel the tech caused this damage. That being said I will continue to give them my business and refer people to them.
