I bought the double cab long bed after looking at both. I wanted the TRD Sport, so that wasn't an issue. After looking at the bed on the short cab, it looked like one trash can would use up all the space. I don't off road, so that wasn't a factor. The long bed has a long wheel base which makes the ride better too. Looks wise, I like them both.

I got a DB Long bed. The short bed looks too stubby for me and it barely holds a bike

Standard shift double cab only came in short bed, so that's what i got and i am happy with it. If i need to haul my motorcyle i will use a trailer. Holds mountain bikes fine. Need to haul alot of garbage/material=trailer. If the garbage is 6 ft long, get the sawzall and make it shorter. Don't think the extra foot will ever be a problem here.:pccoffee:

    This.

Considering that the "long" = "short" in the fullsized world... there were many times that I wished that my '94 had more than a 6ft bed... like when I had to stuff my 6'3" body back there to snooze for a few hours on a road trip for work.

But on the 2nd gen, my answer is "it depends"
From a utility standpoint, the 5ft bed? May as well buy a 4-Runner and fold the rear seat down and have it secure and weatherproof.
Can't put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in either, but at least you can hang it over the 6ft bed's tailgate. Forget drywall. Either too big, or won't survive the trip home.

    But...

The 6ft bed behind the DoubleCab is a fucking BEAST! That is one big assed midsized truck... makes parking a bit of a chore (says the guy who's work truck is a C7500).

OTOH... If I were wanting to build the ultimate off-road 2nd Gen Taco?

    Regular cab.
    5ft bed.
    Fuck yes! :D

Short beds look better imo and are easier to park but i admit it sucks that i cant fit the fams bikes in the bed like i could in my other truck .....a hitch mounted bike rack solved that problem though. ...a bed extender is also a handy accessory for us sb's.

In the end i still vote short bed

    Yeah.
I don't care much about looks either way, but the DC SB is about as long a wheelbase that I would want to drive. I HATED the way my DC Tundra drove -- felt like a dang limo. I don't need the extra length for utility like some might, and for me, the extra foot isn't worth the dorky way the longer truck handles.

Had an 05 Tundra DC and before that an 06 Wrangler Unlimited and liked them both. Problem with the Tundra was the gas mileage was terrible. I get better mileage with my 66 F100 with a big block V8 than the Tundra. The stretch Wrangler was great but being a soft top could not keep anything inside because everything got stolen out of it and if you locked the doors someone would knife the soft top. Started out looking for the long bed Tacoma but bought a 09 Tacoma DC short box and it seems to be the best of both. Quick handling, still a decent ride, and I can keep my stuff in it without it being stolen. I did drive a long box and enjoyed it as well but when shopping used you don't always find what you are looking for. liking my new/used Tacoma more every day I drive it. Long story short, I like both but would not trade for my short box double cab now that I have it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I actually need my bed to haul stuff, long bed is essential, short beds look awkward I think, the long bed looks cleaner and more finished.

Im surprised the vote is so close, considering that sb's outsell lb's by a wide margin, at least in dc versions

I never understood the popularity of shortbed pickup trucks. In fact, I would own a longbed if Toyota made one for the Tacoma. For me, a truck has always been about utility rather than visual appeal.

I wonder how many sb owners voted for the long bed?

Long bed for me, just liked the look of it.

Long bed works for me. The 1 out of 100 times I have issues parking it doesn't bother me. Anybody pressuring me to maneuver into a spot can wait. Then again, I'm in Texas so parking here is designed for F-450s in most places, anyways. Shortbed looks nice for off-roading but I'm only gonna be on ranches and trails. The longer wheelbase feels like a better ride to me.

And I'd much rather have enough room 100% of the time than not having enough even just a few times.

I love my Long Bed, some times! For function its great! But I really dont need to haul much of anything, just snowboards and mountain bikes and maybe some gear..

Every now and then I will need to haul tools and materials for my work/job. But I really think a short bed fits my needs and wants better. And I have a bed xtender which will help alot.... Im thinking about getting a short bed sooner or later..:)
I really like the short bed with a Canapy...

Does anyone know if the short bed gets better MPG then the Long?

    personally...

I think the DC profile looks better with a short bed.

The Xcab & reg cab looks good with the longer bed.

it is nice though that Toyota offers the longer bed with the DC.
