I also have a dodge Dakota and i have been looking at the tacoma. I am just worried about towing , I have a little tractor i tow from time to time . The Dodge Dakota with the v8 handles it well , I wonder how the tacoma with a v6 will compare

My Tacoma "long box" (I call it regular) vs my Pops Chevy long box

It's a crap angle but all I got right now

I understand different strokes for different folks and all but always chuckle when my Pops says "if you can't haul your new washer and dryer home in one trip, it ain't a truck."

V6 with factory tow package can safely pull up to 6500lbs.

Ultimately voted "short" since that's what I own...but it's not an easy call for me.

As far as looks go, I honestly think they both look pretty sharp, so that's kind of a tie for me.

I'm on my second DCSB now, and I'd be lying if I said there weren't times when the longer bed would have helped me out. For me though, the bottom line is that I have to do too much city driving (and more importantly city parking) where the short bed is definitely an advantage. If it weren't for that, I would have definitely opted for the longer bed, but at the end of the day the short bed wins for what I use/need my truck for.

For me, it's not about the looks, it is about utility. For my purposes a short bed would be no different than my owning a 4-Runner.

That was basically my point (although I'm not gonna out a buy an ugly POS truck either).

My decision to buy the short bed was certainly not because I thought it "looked better", it was because I knew that given my needs and intended usage, it was the better choice.
