So I found this 5 lug V6 manuel trans. With cab damage. If I get it for less than $1,000 is it worth the time swapping the cab? I already have another 97 cab. I think it would make a fun fast little street truck.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but can you just cut the top off the cab where the cowl and A-pillars meet, and then swap the top from the other truck? Are the A-pillars bent down below the belt line, preventing door alignment if you only do the top?
Either way you end up with one cab that is scrap.

I think it could be a very fun little truck, and just the way you're imagining it too. Fun to have a spunky light little mini truck basically

Not sure how far down the damage is. But I think I'd just cut the old cab off. I know my spare cab is in great shape. Mite as well just go with what I know is good. The only thing I think I need to buy is a new front window.

Since you are looking for opinons here - here's mine. If the frame is not rusted out, it would probably be fine going down the road with a new cab. My truck had a similar looking accident. Black ice...... Cab was crushed. No body shop would fix it... Found a used cab, put it on and it has been great. Goes down the road just fine ..... Check the frame with diagonal measurements to check for damage.

... curious as to what a body shop charge to put a different cab on, did they give you an estimate?

Don't remember the price. It was probably around 3 grand, including the cab. I do remember the shop manager saying " this is worth saving" after he saw the condition of the underside.

If you have the time, money, place to do it.
If the frame, engine, tranny are good.
If you get a good price.
    Sure.

As for the convertible idea, I did that to a Chevy LUV with a 350. Fun stuff. Hard top convertible. Cut it right the first time, cap the cuts with flanges to close off gaps, add weather strip to both sides and add snap clamps. Take the top off in good weather, put it back on in bad weather (or parking for long periods or near birds).
