    hey all,

I am looking to add to my fleet of Tacos. This one would be a beater/gas saver for me. The one I let people borrow when they want to move a sofa...

I am looking at a pretty sweet 2001 Tacoma. It is in pretty darn good shape but here are the specs and let me know what I should pay for it.

    2001
    4 banger
    automatic
    4x4
    extended cab
    160k miles
    bedliner
power windows, locks, cruise control..ect (SR5 maybe?)
    Not TRD.
    Very clean inside and out.
Only one spot of body work needed, $300 would make it perfect.
    needs tires Yesterday.
    probably due for transmission service.
$650 tune up done last year
    nice aftermarket stereo
    everything works as it should.
    White on cream interior

I think for $1,100 after the purchase price, I could have it immacute (tires, bodywork, tranny flush)

    The million dollar question:
How much should I pay for it?

dudez, where you finding them for those prices?
In my area, single cab, 2wd, 4banger, auto goes for more than that...
If you are getting them for 3-4k...or even 5k with this configuration, bring them to DC and sell them for more!

Lemme do some more 'real research'

You guys have got to be wrong on this one....I just checked to see what actual "SOLD" prices were at auction and here goes:

Date sold place sold type of sale price miles cond color eng
    03/03/11PENSCOLARegular $10,100 119,490AvgWHITE4G5Yes
    03/03/11MANHEIMLease $6,250 157,749AvgRED4GOYes
    03/09/11SEATTLERegular $11,900 82,861AboveRED4GANo
    04/07/11GTR PHNXLease $8,700 84,703AvgBLACK4G5Yes
    04/08/11MANHEIMLease $3,800 202,622BelowGREEN4G5Yes
    04/13/11BUTLERRegular $10,500 53,425AvgGOLD4GAYes

The 3800 one is in below average condition. These are all 4x4 ext cab and 4 bangers. I do not knop which transmission they had.

I went off KBB fair condition in your area, but KBB is usually a little high, no?

If you said it had minor repairable body work I'd call it fair condition.

I think good was up to 5 ish on private party...

minor body work....a half dollar size spot where the someone must have spilled a chemical that cause the paint to come off. And the other peice is a parking lot scrap.

I don't really trust KBB...the numbers above are dealer auction prices...meaning the dealer was expecting to sell for more on his lot.

Something is not adding up...but it anyone has something similar for 3-4-5k, I got 5k on it right now. Cause I will take the gamble and send it straight to auction based on those numbers.

You should pay nothing for it. It sounds like you don't even need it. No point in buying a depreciating asset when you don't even need it.

    Just my 2 cents!

that would have listed for 5500-6500 down here last summer when i was looking. Maybe even 7k since its 4x4 and that's rare (for here at least). Probably still the same price a year later since the price of 4 bangers goes up as gas prices go up.

Try NADA Guides: http://www.nadaguides.com/ They are geared towards helping the buyer whereas KBB is geared for the seller. I'm pretty sure you can just enter the VIN to get the value as well. Good luck!

You realize you will NEVER recoup the capital expense of buying and keeping an extra car on the road by the gas savings right?

yeah, I just like having a beater really...and since these don't really depreciate much, if I get a good deal on one I could resell for only 1-2k less a year or two later. No biggie.
