I never thought I'd get a tonneau, but for $100 I figured it was worth a try. Turns out I really like it, but I miss being able to throw the kayaks and bikes in the back easily. So I'm thinking about adding this rack. Here is the mock up. Do you think it would support a RTT?

Not sure about supporting an RTT. May need some kind of reinforcement.

But for a bike or kayak rack, I would think it's alright. I've never actually seen or felt this kind of cover in person though.

    Nice find either way!

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
I don't even know what you're asking for.

haha there does seem to be a lot of confusion.

    I'm asking two questions.

    1. Should I do this? Or do you think it is ugly?
    2. Do you think it would support a RTT?

I think it looks fine, but won't be able to support a ton of weight.

How did you find a tonneau for $100??

    1. I think it looks just fine, and would greatly increase the potential storage/usability of that part of the truck (you could put a basket on the bars when you aren't carrying the RTT.

    2. Tough to say, but most likely. Worst case scenario, you might need to build a support structure that goes in the bed under the cover. Also, it will be somewhere between difficult and impossible to lift the cover when the RTT is on there, so you may want to consider including some kind of drawer/slide out functionality in the aforementioned support structure.

I could really utilize something like this otherwise I wouldn't be doing it. But I also like to balance functionality with appearance. Some people might think just get a camper shell, but I prefer the truck to stay shaped like a truck.

I was more interested in people opinion of the appearance. Is it terrible? Is it cool looking? is it just meh?

For bikes it would be great, buy I don't see how kayaks are going to fit on it. As far as a RTT, manufacturer of the tonneau should be able to answer that, or look underneath it for a weight limit tag.

I mean if you want your truck bed to look like the top of a subaru then go for it.

Just got lucky. I'm always cruising CL.

the "broken hardware" was a sheered rivet that I welded which actually improved the strength of it. the other side was getting lose so I did that one while I was at it.

I would use my trusty old harbor freight bed extender in addition to the rails.

I dont think it looks too bad.. but if it was me i would make maybe some cross members under the cover to help support the weight.

I would probably keep the bars and feet off most the time unless actually utilizing them so it would just be the two channels for the most part.

This is how I would drive it daily.

Well I was thinking some aluminum flat bar to back the rails the whole length but because of the shape of the bottom of it I think it would be pretty difficult to make an effective cross support between the two rails.

@3pointslowto4pointwoah I still wish I had some sort of cover. I had the XTang Solid Tri Fold and it was awesome.

But just having an open bed all the time just fit me better. I want a bed rack.

For a $100 I would by it even if I didn't need it. I'm sure you can sell it for more. It should work well for bikes. Kayaks?????

I think it looks great personally.
I prefer a cover I can easily gain access to the bed for larger items so I bought a retractable cover, but for $100 I would have done that.
I was planning on using the rails you have, to mount stuff above the bed. My friend has a Silverado with those exact rails on his bed cover. I ended up going with Mobtown's bed rails. In winter I keep my Thule box there, and have used them for kayaks.
