While I was waiting for my ARE MX series to arrive I started playing around in sketch up for a design for my sleeping platform.

This is what I came up with. I'd never used this program before until I tried this. There is actually a Tacoma bed that someone made that you can import into the program so that you have something to work with.

Ultimately I tweaked the hatches slightly when I was building it so that the hatches plus the aluminum cross peices could be removed easier in case I wanted to haul a large item without removing the entire platform.

This is how it actually turned out, with a few minor tweaks.
    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

And some photos of it in use and some of the electrical and curtains that I added. (I need to take better pictures of the curtain and electrical setup, these are all I have for now)

    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I had this platform in my truck for about half a year. All through summer, fall and part of winter. It served its purpose well over many camping trips. I just took it out last week. Before it goes back into the truck this spring I'm going to paint it and I also have a few ideas I want to play with regarding how I can make it lighter.

    Cypher,

For sure, I'll post pics when it is loaded and completely outfitted. I ordered a custom Jack's Plastic Paco Pad (seemed to be the most bullet proof/comfortable option). It ships on the 29th.

Not getting my shell until the 25th, so it will take some time... but I will post pics.

As far as what is hiding under the cover. These pictures are taken in my neighbors garage and he is the woodworking ninja (in the pictures) who helped me build this platform. I believe it is a Model A or Model T that is being restored.

That's amazing- great job! Question for those who sleep in the bed with a cap- how do you close and open the lid to the cap from the inside?

Just push it open or pull it closed. I think you're overthinking this one.

Lol I know it seems that obvious but my glass has no release that I can access from inside the bed.

That is a sweet setup with the boards and is a great idea, but I'm curious if anything is holding them in place? I mean, looks like they'd fly right through the back window if you had to hit the brakes.

Looks to me like the fins are at the dowels- not any room to go forward. Also, friction of the wax & grip pad would keep them from sliding back, if the owner takes off crazy fast all the time. Looks like a sweet solo setup to me!

Nice first post! Love the board rack. Time to hit those empty off-the-beaten-path breaks.

This thread makes me wish I got a long bed. Would love to put a cap on my short bed and be able to camp inside of it...but I'm 6'1" and the bed is 5'.
