Yes! Backed up to the sand! It's a state park so you either need a pass or $15 to get in... Closest to Hawaii you'll get on a hot day

This is an experiment we did for a simple camp awning. It used a lightweight backpacking tarp, about 8x10 ft. I picked up four metal canopy poles off eBay for about $60 (and used three). Paracord and tent stakes held three corners, and the fourth was tied to the truck.

I like the setup, very shady for the tailgate area. Having the tarp over the truck kept the cab/topper cooler. The downside, it was not very stable once afternoon wind got above 5mph.

Also, to make it work I had to exchange the topper struts for some shorter ones. The original struts let the rear window extend too high above the roofline. The Leer dealer swapped them out at no charge.

Nice setup. It will keep rain from running into the bed when the hatch is put up in addition to providing shade over the cap and tailgate. I would probably just get another pole and just back the truck under the canopy.

I kind of agree. Reason I tried it the way I did was because I thought that tying it to the truck would be more stable. Turns out it is not much more stable.

Next thing I want to try is 1 or 2 horizontal poles from the truck, to see if that stabilizes it.

Wonder if two more poles and a different guy line pattern on the corner would work to stabilize it better?
    tarp.jpg

I know it is a shit load of line, but the tarp idea is cool and gives a lot of usable space near the truck.

From the picture it looks like the center of the tarp is raised. Is it just the way the photo looks or is there something holding the middle up????
