I was thinking of one of those tool boxes that sits on the bed rails. But I'm doubting if it will fit or not. This would be a great alternative. How did you attach it to the bed?

At the time I bought a yakima bike rack which was on sale so silly me thought I should buy it. It was a lockable bar that had 2 thingies attached to bed railing and rest was locked in with a special key. I needed something for my scuba gear and did not have finances to buy myself a hard tonneau so ended up buying a stanley heavy duty box on wheels. Poked a few holes in the bottom of the thing for water drainage when scuba gear was wet. I also cut 2 holes on each side and threaded yakima bike rack right through it. Lasted me for about 6-8 months or so. Then I got really tired of reattaching my front wheel every time I wanted to go mountain biking so I made myself a bike rack out of 1 inch pvc pipes and have been using that since.

Here is a closeup of how I attached that box. I can also bolt it to the floor when I have to.

I'm going to have to figure something out, as I dont feel the lock on the back window is strong enough to keep people out. I like the box, but Ill probably end up getting a metal one and mounting it to the bed somehow.

Well if it helps any... there is no such thing as a thief proof lock box. Any box is more of a deterrent than anything. But in my case I also have it bolted to the floor. Another thing is that I only put that box in when I am scuba diving so its not in the way at all other times.

Just came back from topperking. Ordered myself a leer 100xr so in 2-3 weeks time I shall no longer be topless.

I did not order anything fancy about it aside from the sliding window up front. I figure once I get the topper installed I will need to look into spray painting the ceiling black (but only if it annoys me). I did not want to get a carpet on my ceiling because frankly.. not like I plan to live there or anything.

Meanwhile I started measuring up the bed and not really getting numbers I was looking for. Every time I measure I get a different reading.

Wheel well height looks like 9.5"
Depth of truck bed from tailgate to front (where there is a little lip on each side that eventually becomes a wheel well) measures 52"
Width of truck from that lip to other side lip measures 57"

So on the way back I stopped by home depot and looked at what they sold. Thick plywood runs $13+ per 4x8ft board. They also have some longer boards priced at $29 per. Also hinges cost about 3 bucks per. Low cost carpets cost around 59 cents per square foot. 9-10 inch wide boards cost around $8+ so overall cost of project should not run more than $100 bucks which is super.

Any of you ever seen hair-line cracks around the rear glass hinge anchors? My brand new Leer 100XQ has a few 1'' cracks in the paint around the anchors that are fastened to the shell itself. I just dont know if its just the paint or the fiberglass. Going to try to post photos.

Just another consideration and data point for anyone looking. I've got a Leer (model ?) with the aluminum framed sliders on the side and the aluminum framed double latch rear window. I broke the sliding window glass on one side. For replacement you can either take the frame out, drill the rivets on the 'b' pillar and spread the frame apart to fit in a new custom cut, hopefully-the-right-size piece of glass or just order a new window from Leer which comes complete with frame, glass, screen, latch etc and unbolt the ring on the inside then just bolt the whole new window in.

The framed back glass should be fairly easy to replace too or to replace with a piece of plexiglas or lexan should the need arise.

The other canopies, while nice and sleek looking with flush glass and frameless rear windows, also look expensive and harder to replace. On the flush side window units they look like they might be glued in which is a PITA compared to a simple bolt in installation.

Something to think about anyways, especially if you haul a lot of construction debris or ungainly, pointy, heavy, loose things in the back. Replacement cost on the entire side window was $190 from my local dealer, I did the install.

To help make sure it doesn't happen again I plan to make some clear plexi guards that will mount to the frame inside the cab and protect all the windows.
