    You have a valid point.
    The issue boils down to experience. Experience of the rider and experience of the shop. There are good shops and bad shops. One must really interview the bike shop before purchasing a bike to find one that meets a comfortable quality level. For a novice bike buyer, often the safety net and support of a good quality bike shop is a good thing. I also recommend getting to know the owner of the shop, not just the salesmen.
    For the experienced rider, one does not need the support of the shops as much, as one generally then has their own set of specialized bike tools and has gained the knowledge of how things should be.
    Personally, I would never take my bike to a local shop for repair unless it is for facing or something for which I don't yet have the proper tools for.
    Sometimes I will support my local shop by buying tubes or what not. I believe in supporting local businesses as long as they provide a quality product/service.

    Nice build, good job. Good idea with buying it piece by piece too. I am tossing around the idea between building a new mt bike or an assault rifle.

    Just got my new tires in and tools for my new cranks. Will be doing some work this weekend.
    Also going to throw the snow shoes (studded Nokians) on the Mantra and get some winter riding in :D

    i go on mtbr every now and then but its just so big so i dont think its as good of a community as here. I also go on pinkbike but not really on their forum section. There is also ride monkey but never really got into that one...they seem cool though
