Side to side play in steering rack piston? Normal?

    You are not supposed to "torque guide down", but there is very specific procedure about the setting the that "cap". If it's tighten to much, the rack will go very fast.

    Can you tell how much play did you have in the roller that would cause such play in the wheel?

    the piston was mint, free of any marks or corrosion. The roller was not worn itself but there was some slop on the bearing and the setup itself either was worn out or allowed the piston to move too much. I torque it to 18ft pounds using a fish scale as my torque wrench doesn’t do that low. And then backed it up approximately 19 degrees.
    I replaced the guide, spring and cap.

    Like I wrote before I had quite side-to-side movement on the roller (the bearing was running smooth tho) that was causing the "piston" move, like you can see in this video below, but I never had such movement on the tire. By the way, I did wheel alignment a year before I replaced the roller for bushing so if if I had any slope in the wheel, they would never be able to adjust it. Of course, after I replaced the roller for bushing I did not need any wheel adjustment. Truck is driving the same, just does not make that rattling noise.

    I tested the torque on the old nut and it was 8 ft pounds at max depth almost. It think it was mostly lack of pressure on the drivers side end allowed it to move

    I am confused like hell. So you replaced the guide with the new one but the same roller type, correct? The slope you experienced was with worn bearings on the roller or just side to side movement or cap not torqued correctly or all of that?

    I replaced the ROLLER bushing guide with the SOLID bushing guide, new spring and new cap. Before the replacement the rack piston on the drivers end side was able to move left to right and up and down within the sleeve.

    Got it. How that roller looks like - I mean bearing condition and how much is side to side roller movement inside the case?
