Until I decide what to do with my crappy window trim, I covered mine with two carefully applied rows of black electrical tape. Easy, cheap, and quick. Looks a lot better than it did!

My window trim was faded and looked more gray than black. After some work with a clay bar and a couple of applications back to black they’re looking good. Might try the same thing on my fender trim.

I slapped some new ones on my truck today. After all the work repainting my truck, I didn’t want to put those cracked and faded ones back on my soon to be shiny paint.

Hell yeah hombre that blue looks great on the first gen body! I can't wait to see it finished up, great choice! What's the name of the color if you don't mind me asking?

It’s the cavalry blue that you see on 3rd gens and new forerunners sometimes. It’s a pretty rare factory option. I think it came out really nice though.

Thought it looked familiar. There is one i see around here. That is a beautiful color for the body of the first gen. A guy in here did a standard cab first gen long bed Tundra in cement and it came out awesome too. Just really compliments the body shape and lines. Made a great pick on that paint hombre

In the 'fix your wheel flares' thread, Krylon Fusion Satin Black paint is suggested because it adheres well to plastic and rubber and later in the thread the Fusion line is said to not be available anymore. I just spotted it at O'Reilly and next-day-ordered the Krylon Fusion in Satin Black for the flares and did a test paint job on a window trim piece thanks to this thread. In brief, I think the Krylon Fusion is perfect for this. It looks like a factory match to the rubber seal and doesn't stand out at all as a Kragenized home-painted junk which I was mildly expecting. It adheres well to the flexible seal (top third) even when flexed and I expect it should last a long time. Upon application, the Fusion dried with a more glossy finish than I expected for a 'satin' product, perhaps because I used 3 thick coats, so I spent 5 mins wet sanding the aluminum portion with 320 then 800 grit. I left the flexible seal unsanded as the slight gloss looks a lot like rubber after recent addition of protectant.

The pic below is taken in HDR with a modern cellphone camera, and captures pretty well that the finish looks like a nearly perfect match. This route looks a lot better than I expected, so I'll keep this instead of swapping for new sometime. Another lesson learned is that the Fusion Satin Black /is/ shinier than I expected, so I'll look for a flat black Krylon Fusion for the wheel flares. The Krylon Fusion is a great find for painting plastic/rubber, I'm going to look for it in Flat Brown to camoflague sprinkler parts in the yard next.

that looks interesting, you said it can adhere well to the rubber moldings/strips around the exterior windows?
perhaps the side mirror housing as well?

It works far better than I expected on the flexible seal section of the lower window trim. I almost wet-sanded the flexible rubber part with 2500 grit to bring it up to show car quality, but figured time is better spent elsewhere. I haven't tried it on the flexible rubber seal that runs around the remaining periphery as you mention but I suspect it might work perfectly for that. The satin might be a bit glossy for the remaining rubber trim, at least for me, as this truck never gets washed and the only shiny spot is now this lower piece which is small enough to not look out of place. I tried this first instead of plasti-dip because I was looking for a closer match that can be sanded/renewed if necessary.

I think the Fusion /is/ perfect for the mirrors and I think threads here recommend that. Last I checked, Amazon didn't have Fusion but O'reilly does so it seems it is not out of production as the wheel flare thread questions.

my stock rubber looks nothing like that!
yours looks like brand new like it never rains in your locale
could be that the continuous freeze/thaw/freeze cycles here have taken its weathering toll onit
i did pickup some rustoleum trim restore product to try this spring make it look better, on a black truck it really looks bad

Yeah we just had a drought for 10 yrs and with an inch of rain a few weeks go my neighbor’s house flooded because drainage isn’t really considered much here. But this truck has never been parked inside so I’m surprised the rubber is all in like new shape. The inner door seals look brand new too. The only aging that shows is the electrical tape they bundled wires with in the engine room is starting to separate. Also 040 white has no clearcoat to fail. I have heard Toyota spec’d high quality plastic and rubber, which must be the case. The seals do look better than on my infinity that is 8 yrs newer.

I took out the rear window and have an accordion boot connecting to the shell for climbing through. So my rear window seal is still brand new in the closet. The clearcoat failed on the shell and the shell window
trim shows it age. The shell ooks like crap compared to
the truck so that is a good comparison to contrast Toyota quality vs. Leer which fared much worse.

Also I never washed this truck with soap since new and always joked it was to protect the paint. I think the lacknof exposure to soap and other products might have really helped. I had it clay barred at a body shop a few weeks ago, first time the pant was ever touched, and it looked new aside from the chips. I need to figure out what kind of sealer to use to maybe slow down oxidation now that it is cleaned up.
