The 2016 Tacoma is my first modern 4x4 so excuse me if this is a stupid question, but it bugs me enough to ask it...

Every time I drive up or down my dirt driveway too fast (which is very bumpy and inclined) the Slip Indicator light will briefly flash and the front end will make this grinding/buzzing noise that I can feel through the break petal. This usually happens around sharp/fast turns, or anytime the tires lose a little traction in the lose dirt. It also happened to me the other day when I was quickly pulling into a parking lot - I entered the ramp at a diagonal angle, probably faster than I should have, but nothing that should have caused any damage... It seems that this happens to me anytime I do a maneuver that causes the truck to lose even a little traction. BTW, I am not in 4x4 when this happens. None of my previous trucks did this, it normal for the Tacomas?

It's normal, if you don't want to hear it turn off your Traction Control and enjoy slipping and sliding and throwing dirt/rocks all over the place. The grinding noise is ABS actuators.

Thanks for putting me at ease... What causes the sound exactly?

Anti Lock Brake system actuators, the brake pads are basically activating/deactivating at a rapid pace to keep your tires from locking up but to keep you straight on the road when it senses the rear end slipping.

One of the funniest pictures I've seen, especially with the Clint head in the sky.

Also there are G force and Yaw sensors. They are tied into Abs and rollover system etc etc . I've found them to be much more sensitive than my 2nd gen so far.
Usually happens coming into parking lots etc as well.

The sound is the ABS pump. The pump also works to modulate the wheels in traction control situations. If you ever watch a crawl control video (which also uses the pump to modulate the wheels) you'll recognize the sound.

Here's a few older threads which will put your mind at ease.

I have heard this during similar situations. I cant believe that a Grinding noise is normal. I understand traction control kicking in but this grinding feels like im trying to dry clutch gears. I can feel a shutter down the center of the cab.

it's your ABS attempting to straighten out the truck. My 2011 did this all the time, especially in the snow. Did a great job of keeping that light rear end from coming around on you when ya being stupid but not so much fun in the dirt if ya wanna play.

Anyone of you guys stopped the truck on a uphill, later step on the gas but not enough power to move the truck go forward then hear this noise? That's what happened to my Taco today. I thought the ABS will only kicks in while the tires lost traction.

If you gave it gas and didn't move, wouldn't that mean you don't have traction?
