I read through this whole thread to see if Marlin's seat would come up. That's what I was going to use but I had genuine trans issues so I splurged on OEM since they rebuilt it for me. No reason it shouldn't work. I also added the URD short-shift and I agree 100% it's a night and day difference. I would recommend swapping out the plastic while you're at it though. Same labor to get to it.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
I am presuming when you mention bushings, that is the white nylon bushing that the ball goes into?
My shifter(06), no matter what gear it was in had over 3+" of play...I did not have any trouble getting it into gear. The mechanic where I get my insp sticker asked what was up with it...I figured it was the nylon bushing. It turns out it was fine but the shifter mechanism was totally mush on the inside. He ordered a new one and I am still using the old bushing. The shifter works fantastic.
Of course I only drove it a week or so and I had to drop my truck off to have the frame inspected for rust holes...My frame was very bad and the dealer still has it and they rented me a 014/F150 4door.
I did inquire if Toyota would give me a sweatheart deal so I could buy new 4 door 6spd Tacoma....but they don't do that any more. Darn. MJEFF

Thank you, from looking at some of the linked threads I see the shifter is a 2 piece unit and it is that rubber that goes bad causing the shifter sloop.

Only other standard I have any kind background with was from a 72 F250 4 (really 3) speed. That shifter was nothing more than a long ass bent metal shaft.

I just installed the TRD Short (Quick) Shifter into my 08 4x4 that has a bit over 85K on it. I noticed a huge improvement. The shifter now has minimal play I'm really loving the reduced throw. Definitely a worthwhile investment.

Glad I got the marlin part as when I pulled the shifter out there was no seat at the base of the shifter. I guess this was the reason reverse was not working.

Shifter is setting up with jb weld.

I'll say this if your going to keep the factory sifter knob don't shorten the shifter more than 1/2 inch.

Limited funds. URD alone would not fix my problem. As my shifter was shot as well as the seat. Anyone adding a STS I would add a marlin seat

Well I got lucky, i finally took my x-runner in for the 3rd gear grinding problem and they covered the lifetime warranty even though they gave me a used tranny it is covered also. While the dealer was putting it in I got him to install the bushing and my URD short shift kit. It is like new now.

I have a 2005 TRD 4x4 6 speed manual and I've been having A LOT of slop and play with my shifter. DId some investigating and discovered that its the shaft and not the nylon bearing (although I bought that replacement part already). Would anyone happen to know the part number for the shaft replacement itself? I actually found 3 of the same type of part, each with a slightly different part number and need help identifying the correct one for my truck. Was hoping that somebody might know the correct part number for the part I need in to help avoid wasting money on the wrong part.

Thank you to anyone that may be able to help!

Wish I could. Never rebuilt a stock one.

For those with slop, the easiest way to check is to pull the shifter off and grab the nylon bushing and see if it moves on the ball tip at all. It should be able rotate around the ball, but if there is any slop on it, IE you can pull it on and off the ball seat even a little bit, that's gonna translate to alot of slop at the shifter. I love my hurst shifter, but after a couple months of hard shifting I had several inches of slop while in gear in any direction, contact hurst and he ended up cutting me a new nylon bushing of stronger make and its been fine for the last 6 months or so, no issues.

If Coup is still out there he rebuilds and shortens them. He rebuilt mine got rid of the slop and i added the URD short shift. Great setup!

Another way to tighten up a sloppy shifter. The rubber isolator bushing was complete mush, leaving about 5" of slop with in gear. (Could hardly tell the difference between neutral and in gear)

I used two #10-32 machine screws (3/16") and nyloc nuts. I drilled it out by hand, and it wasn't very difficult. It's not a hardened steel shaft.

Just bought this beast last Friday. Elated. No mods as of yet, but I did order blue replacement bulbs for the interior ;-) and, a huge skull decal for the hood.

YASS! Finally someone with an answer to my very same problem. I will definitely do this to mine before dishing out $300 for a new shifter assy. THANKS TACO BROTHER!

Looks like a lot of info has been posted already, but I'm very happy with my TRD shifter! Much better than stock and a worthwhile upgrade.
