Hello there! So finally I got my first brand new, awesome looking 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD pro manual. A little background about me, I have driven manual cars all my life, including 3 ford F100 manual pick up trucks. I actually first learned to drive at 9 years old in a ford f100 manual pick up truck, yeah, wasn't pretty lol.
Anyhow, I got this baby totally confident that I can drive a manual, but now I am not that sure, she is making me question all that I know about shift stick driving. She has right now 600 miles and I find that her reaction is very slow. Is that normal for the TRD pros? Powerful yes, she has A LOT of power, yet slow reaction. So I am wondering if this is due to her transmission that is meant to be slow but powerful or if I am doing something wrong. Her acceleration from 0 to 45 is very very slow for example. I do shift mostly by ear, but I started checking the rpm so I could give you some more information. Looking to the rpm I am shifting usually around 2500 to 3000 RMP.
Then I found this video where u can cleaaaaaaaaaaaarly tell that this truck is not shifting at 3k rpm. Am I just driving all wrong? Anyone else experiencing these slow reactions? Should I just punch the gas and start shifting at higher RPM?
Oh, some more info, my husband who has been a truck driver since his 20's laughs and compares my truck with a tractor-trailer because of the slow reaction.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys have to say.

Not wrong, just on the conservative/normal side. You have room for more revs if you need them.

Check out the clutch accumulator delete mod thread. A bunch of MT guys on there that can help you.

I would say its the clutch fluid accumulator and drive by wire throttle pedal. I did notice that in the beginning for sure. I was going to install pedal commander but i actually learned to live with it. Sometimes you gotta mash the pedal for a second or so to rev match when downshifting, a bit annoying yes.

My previous truck had a throttle cable and no accumulator. The response was instant.

Couple interesting threads about those issues on here. Good luck!:burnrubber:

It's not you, it's the ECM programming (tune). I have an early production 2016 V6 M/T, and had to learn a completely different way to drive stick. Even so, some things continued to irritate me (bog off the line, very inconsistent throttle response, bucking, etc etc.)

The Accumulator delete mod gets rid of the engagement delay (which adds another level of weirdness), but OVtune has made this truck a joy to drive again. It does what I want, when I want. No more mental gymnastics to pull off a rev match downshift!

    Here's the OVtune M/T thread:

It’s not you it’s the trucks tuning and the clutch fluid accumulator. I was all proud of my M/T too but the stock tuning was so horrible I wanted to trade it in after 6 months. I finally did the Accumulator delete mod and it helped a lot and gave me a reason to keep trying to fix the things that were making me hate rowing my own gears.

I just ordered Ovtune and the core short throw shift kit to hopefully get me excited about driving my truck again.

I’m sure I’ll be able to live with my truck after I’ve done all the mods.. just sucks to have to change all this just to make my truck not annoying and frustrating to drive.

Best advice right now is to rev it well passed 3500 before grabbing the next gear

OP these guys are right (except for the drive above 3500rpm mention... get OVTune to take care of that weirdness for you and it will drive normal at all rpm).

it's true the truck is a slow dog from the factory. you are right on the edge of having a super responsive truck. mine is ultra responsive.

    - ADM as mentioned above. kits available if you want to DIY.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mt-accumulator-delete-mod-adm-and-bs-thread.568303/
    - OVTune for MT's. no substitute. do not skip this one.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...anual-transmission-engine-ecu-reflash.515734/
    - and beyond this if you want to go up the range of responsiveness, next stops would be exhaust IMO.
    - a short shifter or Core shifter will help also.

I'm all about the responsiveness and kinda go nuts on it. next stop for me is a URD Stage 2 clutch. even after all I've done I'm not stopping there... it keeps getting better and better with the driving experience.

it's a totally amazingly fun truck to drive, but you gotta give her a good bit of TLC to bring her alive.

I test drove mine and thought it was me not driving a mt for a while, then i found this website and realized it was not me.

Now I'm used to it and just drive different. I adapted i suppose.

I do plan to delete the accumulator and get ovtune though.

it was similar for me. when i picked up the truck i drove around the corner for some gas with the salesman. stalled twice, barely could move the thing, couldn't find consistent power or clutch bite point. so embarrassing.

2 months later i was sick of the fight and almost sold the truck, but decided to try a Pedal Commander as a last chance effort. that helped a lot and i started modding to bring the truck around.

after OV showed up i dropped the Pedal Commander, got really into the details, and the truck had evolved into amazing after coming so so close to just dropping the thing. now it's the greatest vehicle I've ever owned.

Same here. I now have about 2500 miles on mine and I've quite adapted as well to a point where I am happy where it is at. I normally shift between 2800 and 3200 RPM, it drives really smooth for me. I just need to see someone with an OV tuned M/T to see the difference to even consider one.

I have stalled my truck more since i got it then i have any other vehicle in the last 10 years.

It's the occasional forgetfulness i guess. I'm not sure if I'm forgetting to push the gas or if the truck is forgetting to react.

you need more life under your foot. or maybe in this case both feet referring to the accumulator problem.

seriously, if you like driving, this vehicle can inspire you. if i was in your shoes knowing what i do by this point, i would be up to date on all the TSBs, then install OV. if you're missing the fun, that is. i definitely was.

I'll get around to both of those eventually. I like the truck. Although I've never really loved every thing about every vehicle I've had.

Honestly, my biggest complaint is the shifter knob twists super easy when the cab is hot. That one thing drives me crazy

No clips, it twists. I'm familiar with loctite, use it all the time in my line of work. Just not sure it will work with the amount of expansion and contraction that is happening with the heat. I'll try it one day I'm sure

You gotta flog this girl if you wanna enjoy the ride. ;-)

Don't be afraid to mash on the pedal and get the revs up before shifting.

I might look at some tuning or mods at some point, but like most people I've just gotten used to it.

My other vehicle is a Miata, which is the opposite of this thing. Sometimes I go from one to the other and sorta forget how to drive momentarily LOL.

On the positive side, the clutch feels good and the shifter is super-smooth, to me anyway.

I've been driving manuals about 12 years now and this truck was the trickiest to get use to. Believe it or not it took until about 8000 miles on the ODO for it to feel and drive smoothly! Some of that was me learning but most of it has to have been the truck loosening up abit and learning my habits cause it doesn't normally take that long.
