i can pick up a slightly used smitty built rtt for 650. Fair price? How does it compare to the tepui ayer? From my understanding both bases are made of aluminum correct? Looks like i can get the tepui ayer for about $740 from rei with the current discount.

He read it on the internet and knows not what he talks about.

They look the same; must be the same.

The Tepui Ayer is a far superior tent. If you can swing by REI and look at one you'll notice that regardless of what the specs say, they are not the same material (Tepui being of higher quality).

The sliding ladder sucks. Get the telescoping.

Source: I have a sliding ladder on my CVT and hate it.

Look at the specs. They are the same. Same material, same shitty assembly.

The telescoping ladder is terrible. They don't last. They collapse when you climb them after a while.

As I said in my post, you don't know what you're talking about, but that's fine.

The specs are not the same, the material is not the same, and the "same shitty assembly" is not the same.

My local rei did not have one on display but i may call one that is a little bit farther away and ask them tomorrow. I looked at the smitty built today (used tent ) and liked it a lot minus a few things. The cover velcros around and then 2 straps go over it. The owner admited that he has a problem with the back strap breaking some times and hes had to replace it. and that the tent seems to blow up with air while driving down the road. He said he normally uses a ratchet strap in the center of the cover to keep it to a minimum. Is the ayer also velcro around or does the cover zip on?

It zips on, of course, because it's not a piece of shit.

The TJM and Smittybilt tents are just not as good as CVT/Tepui. They look very similar when set up, but there are a LOT of little things that make them different.

Excellent input, but you're not correct. Simple as that.

Have you had physical experience with either of them? You have not, as I can tell by your lack of understanding of their differences.

Just so happens I have. I get it, cvt and tepui were the only big names in the game for a while and so there is a misconception out there that they are the only good ones. I also getting you repeat everything you hear on the Internet because you are a follower. That's OK. We can't all be winners. I forgive you.

There are many manufacturers making tents now, and quite a few good ones. It's little things like velcro covers and shoe racks that make a difference. But the materials are the same and they are all made in china.

I think you've answered your question man... It's "slightly used" and already having issues with breaking straps.

As I said before, I have a CVT. In my opinion, Tepui has a small leg up on CVT in terms of quality, but they're both leaps and bounds ahead of TJM and Smitty.

Get an ayer for 20% off and you'll not be disappointed. It's worth the extra $90.

I am sure you can find someone locally with a Tepui. Don't compare it to the ruggedized version as that's not fair. Even the cheapest Tepui will be a better product.

I just wanted to know if i should spend an extra $100 for the tepui i didnt want a pissing contest lol

But in all honesty the zip cover is kind of a big plus for me considering my first experience with the velcro today. Zipper just seems like it will allow less air in while traveling and will last longer. I was gunna wait for the cvt gb coming up but the local find had me changing my mind and got word of the 20% from rei has me leaning in tepuis direction

Yes, Tepui, CVT, TJM, and Smitty are all made in China. Are you really dense enough to believe that this makes them all the same? Judging by your display picture, I'd say you likely are.

Don't lie to yourself. If you truly believe these are the same products, you've never used either.

In addition to 20% off, you also get the REI warranty. That's worth well over $90.

What about ARB RTT? I have a wholesale account which I can get ARB and Smitty but not CVT or Tepui. The smitty is ridiculously cheap with my discount.

The ARB is a different animal, and the only one I don't have much experience with. You can tell by looking at them that they're a bit different than the rest, but I cannot comment on if that's a good or a bad thing.

My buddy has an ARB awning which has small differences from my CVT and makes it a better product, in my opinion. I cannot comment on if that translates to their tents too, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Wasnt awear of the warranty. going to call tomorrow and see if a store has one on display around me within a reasonable distance. If not i will more then likely order one anyways. As small as it may be the zipper cover really sells me. Just seems a lot more durable after the problems that accured with the locals velcro and he hasnt had it a year yet. Not saying its a bad tent but small stuff like that bothers me..besides i sold my stock wheels/tires yesterday so that pretty much clears the tent

Yes bro I've owned cvt. Other guys in the club have tepui. I now have a Geo. Guess what, they are all the same. Some of the part numbers are even the same (ladder). Look up the specs. 600d poly cotton tent, 1000d cover, 420d rain fly. No they are not all made in the same factory but they are all cheap china manufacturer quality.

My Geo has seen more use than the cvt, and the cvt fell apart faster.

Op- things you get with big names: typically its little accessories. Bigger/smaller foam pad, maybe insulated foam floor, ladder style. Some have lights built in. Some are convertible. The big things is generally a better warranty, certain models may have the overhangs with the annex sometimes included. Ultimately it's a tent. Pick one in your budget with features you want

Edit: actually I think cvt has upgraded their rips top. Might be 280g now.
