Alright, I’ll probably only come if I’m needed because it’s a 3 hour drive

Bilstein 6112 front and 5160 rear. PB Sliders. Relentless Fab bed bars with Tepui RTT. Light bar and ditch lights. Prinsu roof rack.
I had the same thing happen to my 3rd gen last week. According to the built in inclinometer I was over 30 degrees attempting a hill climb. I was in 4L with my rear locked because it was slick. The grade was nice and even because it was at a terrain park. I had just climbed a lesser incline around 25 degrees and then briefly plateaued.

I attempted the second half and immediately got wheel spin. I backed down a little and made another attempt. At that point blue grey smoke came out of my exhaust and I lost power.

A few Jeeple were watching and I immediately felt like the kid in kindergarten that pissed his pants in front of everyone. I backed down and took an alternate route.

No warning lights and everything seems normal. I didn’t hear the clicking OP described.

I’ve had my truck a year and never experienced this. It’s been all over the SW including Moab. This was definitely the steepest sustained climb I’ve attempted and the first where I lost all traction and subsequently all power.

OK so far we have. Do not drive on highway or your ass end will whine... do not drive 30-45 or your front end will howl without plugs. do not drive in dirty/dust environments or your leaf springs will squeek. Do not stop too fast or your drive shaft will thunk . Do not drive up hills or you will bellow smoke. Do not drive over bumps or your vehicle will rattle. So what is this truck supposed to do ? Might as well change the trim to TRD Mall Crawler 4x4.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
That’s potentially a big class action issue for Toyota, what if you couldn’t hold it with the power loss and rolled back down? My friend’s Jeep did that on a hill, it was leaning towards one of the back corners and all banged up from rolling when they got back. His girlfriend drove them home, as the three guys were all hurt, him with a broken leg. None of the guys were belted in, she was the only one who was and rode in the Jeep all the way down the hill and it landed on its wheels.
