Inadequate oil drainback and the PCV is sucking up the extra oil and running into the intake throwing the A/F ratio out of whack and causing the knock/ping and white smoke (rather than typical blue)?

PCV valve happen to be to to the rear on a valve cover?

My brother put a tuner on his Mustang, it would ping/lose power because the oil vapor from the piston cooling jets would mess with the A/F ratio when it was routed back into the intake. Computer would pick up the ping and back things off (losing power) He had to put an oil separator on it and it was an instant cure. Less severe symptoms but he wasn't possibly submerging the PCV either.

They are getting PCV systems to be super effective at evacuating crankcases... sometimes maybe too effective.

Don't know how effective a little separator would be for submerging the PCV though.

A catch can will not help. If the oil was coming from the pcv it would effect all cylinders not just the rear two.

The source of your oil is because you are submerging the rear two pistons in oil. Too much of this will hydro lock your engine and destroy your motor.

I do hope there is a solution but likely the solution would have solved with engineering prior to production

    It’s oil.

    https://youtu.be/toZNyJ2LLPI

No cooling system on this lawn mower. Smoke starts out thick white and as the oil thins it turns blew.

There is oil on the plugs. What else could it be.

Cooling system is pressurized and sealed. If it was coolant it would still smoke even when level.

Oil is not pressurized in the crank case and will stay level when you tip the truck.

Also water in the air is evaporated already. It can’t evaporate once it’s steam. It’s disapating.

PCV valve on the 2nd gens is back driver side valve cover..... id imagine its in the same location on the 3rd gen motor. Pinging could be simply a detonation of all the extra oil vapor, but what you described was my first thought.

This would also be very bad for toyota and the lovely 3.5L in the new tacomas.

    Probably not.

New addition in the manual not to exceed XX* while hill climbing and/or a TSB type deal for the few that come in with the complaint to get a revised oil pan or valve cover whichever the problem is.

0w-20 probably wouldn't do much to help that scenario either.

No this is not a small change for a valve cover..... the ability to drain oil from the back of the head down at a proper rate into the pan is a cylinder head / block issue. This is not a small issue.

We can probably just hang it up on it ever being addressed. Maybe fixed once. Just keep'em level boys operating as designed.

Get a vid of the instrument cluster showing no loss of oil pressure. Stick the truck in low low and keep your foot on the firewall when it smokes. Yep blow the bastard up while still on warranty.

Yeah, change baffling to keep the PCV from sucking it up if that is the case. Valvetrain is designed to be submerged in oil.

Eh valvetrain is designed to be bathed in oil. Not submerged, that stated submerging it should not harm the motor just more parasitic loss. The problem is the fact that it sounds like the amount of oil being pumped to the heads to lube the valve train is greater than the amount of oil that is able to drain from the head down back into the block / pan via the back of the head passages when on an incline. Over time (as shown in the video in the OP) this difference creates a pool of oil that then starts to get sucked up by the PCV and fed down into the cylinders (vaccum port on the 2nd gen's intake plenum for the PCV is in the middle so rear cylinders would get it the worst, id imagine the 3rd gen is in a similar spot)

Toyota might be able to do a valve cover change to move the PCV valve further forward to the center of the cover (assuming its at the rear like the 2nd gen) so that this pooling of oil doesnt get to the level of the valve and instead finds another drainback hole to drain down back to the pan.

There is baffling inside the valve cover to keep the oil that is flying around from getting into the PCV, altering this would also alter how oil collecting at the back of the cover would interact with the PCV system. Moving the inlet more towards the center of the valvecover would probably help. Maybe it already is there and there is just that much oil that collects on top the head, I don't know. Just armchair engineering it.

haha correct. posted before i finished my edit above

maybe someone can poke their head in their 3rd gen and see where the actual pcv valve is on the valve cover (likely on the driver side)
