It's best practice when fording water to take it at some speed to start a bow wave. If this is the source of denying my warranty claim, I need to go back to my Land Rover and Toyota needs to take the "off road" decal off their truck.

That's far from a bow wave.

That's my point - it's not deep, but if it was, you still would have wanted to take it at speed. Water splashing into the engine compartment should never damage the engine of an off-road truck.

What did the oil on the dipstick look like after it "blew"?

I didn’t check, which I now regret. It was 11pm on the side of the freeway and I didn’t have my wits about me.

I did check oil / coolant several days earlier after the white smoke on hill climb Both looked fine.

Can anyone recommend how to dispute this with Toyota? Should I find a lawyer? I don’t even know if there are lawyers that specialize in warranty disputes...

i believe there is a hole in fender going into the air filter no? i dont remember.. all i know is you should have contacted toyota corporate first so they can send a master mechanic or whatever and they have to prove the engine was hydrolocked.

The proof the engine wasn’t hydrolocked is the fact that it drove for a few days and 200 miles after crossing the water.

i dont think common sense works for dealerships, that wouldnt pass a proof, as they already stated that it was hydrolocked...which means they need to prove it as you being the customer...

Its hard to comprehend that the damage was done by that water crossing. Here’s some screenshots of my 2015 sport and my buddies 2017 off-road. But substantially covered in muddy water and no issues. Other then my radiator got caked and needed to be sprayed off haha. These trucks can handle some shit. Even the third gens. I think the new motors are just a little more finicky than some.

If they deny it then I would take up a case with toyota corporate. Remember, play nice and act like they're trying to help you until you've exhausted all your efforts. You want them on your side.

    That does suck sorry man...

Even though these trucks are "made to go off road" I'd never take mine through that for this reason

Update: I had to “guarantee” $4k for the regional tech to investigate the damage (they would charge me if they decided damage wasn’t covered). I actually believe that’s an illegal practice in CA, but whatever I agreed to it.

They investigated and believe it was hydrolocked, but couldn’t prove it was from outside water. Bent rod and blown cylinder. I’m pretty sure it was oil from the hill climb. They’re fixing it under warranty.

When I get the truck back I’m going to put it back on the hill and reproduce the issue.

Just joined the forum to participate in the problem solving on this issue.

It seems that the most likely scenario is :

    • Oil getting into intake through either a breather or a PCV or both. Most likely both. However the breather is positioned very unfortunately on the rear of the valve cover.
    • The clicking and ticking sound is a typical sound engines make when they are at the early stages of hydraulic locking. Its similar though not identical to a water hammer effect that happens when incompressible fluids are in compression. 11.8 CR doesn't play around with ANY fluid in the compression process.
    • The exacerbating factors are increased engine speed. This increases oil pressure and volume flow.
    • The color of burning oil has a very slight blue tint but in different ambient lighting it can look grey or white; not to mention the catalyst system can also change this color by burning it also.

The solution needs to be a form of increased baffling, catch can, repositioning of the breather ports.

Was reading through this thread... question: could this be a consequece of the Atkinson fuel economy design of the engine? In otherwords, could the the on board computer be trying to run the engine in Atkinson mode, leaving an intake valve partially open and allowing both oil and fuel to accumulate in the intake manifold and compression chamber by in a sense “retarding” the timing? And if you ran the motor in ECT mode, would that force the engine into Otto timing thereby closing the intake valve via computer generated timing and ensuring all fuel and oil is completely burned on each stoke?

Just guessing here, but seems like there is a lot of technology in these trucks I’m still trying to wrap my head around...

Ive seen it smoke before, but not with ect on. I usually drive offroad with it on so it "holds" the shift points longer

If anyone hasn't already noticed by themes in this forum and others. Toyota will deny warranty for anything and everything. Fuck, my battery is dying at 3500 miles and they won't cover it cause my led grill is wired to it. They deny anything and everything if your truck has dirt on it, water on it, someone sat in it etc. Also there's a reason why the inclinometer maxes at 30 degrees. I've had the smoke on an incline, probs 32-35 degrees. Just past the inclinometer range. Coming from a jeep to this. I can tell that camp roads and parking in your yard were all Toyota intended when they put the Trd off road sticker on the bed.
