more than likely its oil being burped up through the PCV valve into the intake.. I almost bet you pull the intake and see it is covered in oil after the PVC/intake return line. a catch can will help solve this especially if you drill the oil pan to return the oil directly to the oil pan from the catch can... ill catch some pics of mine on my lunch break, but I beliece the PCV is on the back of the passenger side valve cover... which can easily fill with oil on an incline with poor oil return from the heads...

well I was backwards.. the PCV system on the drivers side come from the front upp er of the passenger side valve cover.. however there is a PCV from the drivers side rear valve cover to the intake manifold as shown in the photo below..
    20190601_113721.jpg
This is where I thought it was coming from however.. in an incline position the passenger side would be the first culprit, however the passenger side could be an issue on a steep descent..
    20190601_113747.jpg
I would highly recommend a catch can, or to hook a test bottle to that driver side tube, and go up a steep hill and check for oil in it.. I would assume it would fill right up.. not sure about the clicking, but that may be the oil pump/chain/timing chain/gears being deprived of an oil bath.. unsure where the oil pickup is on this engine (still learning about it).. but chain slap could easily cause that ticking.. oil seeping past the valve seals is unlikely due to how sudden the smoke comes on, and how quickly it subsides when the vehicle is returned to level ground (oil burn off creates thick white/blue smoke. coolant you would notice the coolant level going down significantly) and if coolant were leaking into the combustion chambers you would be lacking power in all situations, not to mention coolant making its way out the tailpipe, and overheating/contaminated coolant issues..

I checked the forward PVC tube, and mine had oil in it.. but I suspect the lower one connected to the intake manifold is the culprit. due to 2 issues, poor oil drainback to the oilpan from the rear of the stock heads, and poor PCV placement.

I’ve had my 15 JK almost vertical with 3 tires off the ground. No smoke...no (known) issues. Haven’t had any problems with my Pro yet either but I don’t wheel it near as hard as I do my Jeep. 6FB5D136-5C54-4358-B186-7B3850ABF260.jpg

Had the low oil warning today. Was going up and down about 30 to 35. Wife was driving and pointed it out. She pulled to level ground and waited 1 minute code went away. She told me, while she was spotting, I had some white smoke while at an incline but quickly went away.

Catch can should do the trick if you're having issues.

sub'd, cause I let out some of the magic smoke this past weekend too.

Same deal as everyone else: going up a long, steep hill, off camber, driver's side down ~20 deg. IIRC the oil warning light went on first, then a bit later got the clicks and white smoke. I backed down, leveled out and kept the engine running to burn off whatever it could. Seems to have been fine since then.

@TheTacoma it'd be great if you could update that 1st or 2nd post with the "Went to Toyota twice, they said there was no problem. No lasting damage, even though smitty showed up at some point." and save 30 pages of reading

I should've been more specific in my post. This is near verbatim. Only difference is mine was not on a long hill. Off camber, low on drivers side, oil light, some light smoke leveled out and burn off on level ground. It was maybe a 30 to 40 ft section on the down hill. Took maybe 3 minutes to negotiate.

Has Toyota officially responded to any of these claims?

Alright I am by no means an expert in anything near this.

But if on an incline and the smoking is coming from the PCV valve, and now is instead running to a catch can, does it mean it is letting the engine run dry VS burning off some oil ?
