That was the dreaded modulator valve . Anything pre-1985 usually had a modualtor valve controlled by vaccuum . If the diaghpram inside the modulator valve broke apart as it was only made of light gasket paper , the engine would suck out all your transmission fluid allowing the trans fluid to get burnt . You knew whan you had a bad mod valve . Misquito,s from the next town were dead in an instant

Another view of the climb. And I believe my comments about it being a 3rd gen problem were based from hearing about it happening with him the first time. Just didn't put together that it was the same truck. The white smoke from the left of the screen is my cigarette.

Great point! Same thing happened to my '85 with white smoke and all- the smoke was so bad I could barely see the cop trying to pull me over in it- just barely saw his red light! I mentioned it in a earlier comment here. Suggested to OP to check the plugs for signs of oil burning, but he should also check the motor oil too, it may be ATF contaminated. also, I wouldn't start the engine until sure the oil is clean, and as mentioned here, the ATF level is good.

The guy who put a marlin crawler in his new taco noted the same thing. Check that thread out - certainly not the only one.

My oil light comes on if I'm heavily off camber or going up a steep incline. No smoke yet.

Never understood why anyone would take a brand new $40K truck and submit it to this kind of abuse? If your really into this kind of stuff why not get an old Gen 1 and fix it up for off roading.

I wouldn't use the word "abuse" as no damage was caused in these situations (assuming the smoking is something that just happens at incline). We are very careful with the vehicles as we go out and wheel, that's the point of a person spotting you and why you don't wheel alone. The trucks were designed for off road, and they do really stinking well off road.

I never understood why somebody would buy a 2wd truck, or buy a truck labeled "off road" and only keep it on road, arguments to both sides of the story.
