Fully agree with you and your son, unfortunately there is no official language. The official government statement is this:
    Source: answer.usa.gov

Me, being an immigrant myself (not from Mexico though) I chose to learn the language as part of integrating me and my family into society. But I can also tell you that having an official language in a country like Germany means nothing as well, but helps in situations like this.

The United States has no official language, and some of us like it that way. Consider California, which has been populated by people who speak Spanish since before the American revolution.

Or Louisiana, which was French before the U.S. bought it.

Incidentally, your spelling and grammar are terrible. If you can't learn to write in English, perhaps YOU should make sure the gate doesn't hit you on the way out.

In related news, I didn't have to learn much German in Germany, most Germans can speak German AND English. Same deal in Italy.

I don't see anything worth getting suspended over in the boy's remarks; isn't the entire purpose of school to turn ignorance into knowledge?

I'm glad your son said that. And I would get that principal in trouble with the school board if I were you. Bigotry my ass

My bad I didn't know the internet required grammar. You can tell the grammar Nazis to chill out since this is teh internetz. Most people here speak English so it is the de facto national language.

Yes, however an extremely large majority of Americans DO speak English, and all of our road signs are in English, so what's your point? There's nothing wrong with having no official language, but our desire for all of those in this country to speak the same language as the rest of us shouldn't be considered offensive.

I don't think you know what the word ignorance means

Couple years ago Live Oak high school in Live Oak, CA allowed Hispanics to wear clothing that displayed the Mexican flag on May 5, but other students weren't allowed to wear clothing showing the American flag. This was national news. I believed the principal was Hispanic too.

I remember that. The next couple years I made sure to wear American flags on the 5th. But I live in such a right-wing area that no one notices anyway haha.

Your sense of irony is as well developed as your language skills, it appears. If you want to stand up for English, the very least you could do is learn how to use it properly, yourself.

    Otherwise, your argument rings hollow.

My point is that the poster who suggested that folks who can't learn to use English properly is a bit of an idiot, as he can't properly use the language himself.

    Not offensive, but very amusing.

This sort of attitude by school administrators and teachers is why I always vote against school bond issues and levys. Throwing money at a problem wastes money it doesn't solve the problem.

No, not at all. He's a kid, and I think the principal was being a dick, and I'm glad to hear the old man got it sorted out.

So I guess no need to get uptight when Spanish was spoken for school announcements 1/365th of the time
