So I worked for Toyota for 6 years and know Toyota really well... So my first impression of the new 3.5 engine is that it was just taking a highlander engine and trowing it in a truck which if you want a truck, that sucks...... Now the new engine is a better design but it is just that, the universal V6 and not a truck engine... If they were really going to increase the over all power they would have stuck to the 4.0... Here is a new article that leaks the HP....

    http://media.toyota.ca/releases/canadians-get-a-sneak-peak-at-the-all-new-2016-toyota-tacoma

For people that just use it as a daily driver it will be great for those of using our truck it sucks... I'm all ready close to 270 HP and 300 Tq and I'm not done tuning and my truck feels much better than the chevy with 305 HP because trucks need torque not hp..... Well I have a unichip on the way so I will have multiple maps so at least I can get back to my 18 MPG... Next year I'll get URD headers and try to get another 15-30 hp and tq.... so unless they add another engine option I guess I'll be keeping 10 and it'll be paid off...... Good news, I can start working on mid travel...

I am griping and I have the right I want a better truck engine not a better car engine.......
    OK and go.......

And I'll eat some crow,, good job Toyota.... they are going to lower gears to compensate for less torque..... More gearing in 1st and less in 6th, that's a win win.... I still want more overall power but that's a good compromise to maintain good power and increase the MPG with the smaller engine.... now if they do maintain the same torque it will be a big upgrade....

    I'll take some crow back.....
I think I was right on the money....... so far the 3.5 is a little wimpy.....
0-60 is about the same as the 4.0 MPG is only up a little over all and like I said it is towing worse than the 4.0....

Low torque in a truck is not a great combination, trucks need high torque... you don't need a bigger engine but 4.0 seams to be the turning point for NA engines...
4.0 and bigger pull much better than the smaller engines....

The 3.5 is a great base engine, they just need to add another option...
The 4.6 would be a very easy add and they use it in other products and it bolts right in....

    Or a more powerful 3.5 but I don't thinks it's practical...

Plus the more I gripe maybe Toyota will make adjustment...... I think 3 engines are the best option to make everyone happy.....

Also not sure why someone exercising their right to be an individual, according to their own self truths, has to do with anything whatsoever Toyota related.

Because no one was saying it was a good idea to reduce the torque of the engine last year... It's a bad idea to reduce the torque on a truck and everyone knows it.... That's one of the reasons the 4.0 sold so many trucks and runners it was much better than a 3.5...... Toyota needs to have 2 V6s, this one for high mpg and a high torque one for the truck guys..... I'm sure, unless the price is crazy, more people would opt for the more powerful engine...... This refresh is just Toyota being cheap.... They will correct it in a few years......

No they really won't. 'Truck guys' will welcome the hp and mpg boost, you're the minority here.

I'm interested in hearing the official numbers from Toyota but I'll still be skeptical until somebody puts a production vehicle on a dyno.

Hey I can't own a Prius and I don't need an F350. This truck has always been the perfect compromise. It's a good size and good worker with minimal problems. If my next vehicle purchase will be this current truck with tech updates, better MPG and more HP... then I am all for it.

It's been beaten to death, but you guys gotta remember what this truck is meant for. A compromise. You aren't gonna see Prius mpgs or Super Duty towing numbers. It's made for the guys that haul tools around, occasional light tow, camping, etc. All that shit is does completely fine CURRENTLY with minimal bitching and the next one will be just as fine.

I think some people's head would explode if they knew how little concerned most Tacoma buyers are with HP and torque numbers.
