All this stuff makes me laugh a little. Deep down inside we all know that we may never see a truck that gets good/great fuel miliage and good/great towing capacity. IRL. Best think to do is get you a beater for the MPG and a 2500/250 for hauling. I will be the first to admit that all the stuff that is talked about with the torque curves and all that but one thing I do get is the horse power talk at such a high rpm. One a perfect world would be great to get peak horse power at a lower rpm rang while getting your peak torque paired close to that. Like I said all this is. Ask ally me reading Chinese lol. I owned a ram 1500 with 6" lift and got around 12mpg average. Didn't tow that much heavy stuff so I got my taco and I love everything about it. Will tow my 18' boat no problem and even haul a full yard of dirt with a short box with ease. Yes I do wish it got a little better fuel mileage but everyone does. A truck is a truck and a car is a car. There are two types of people in this world and I am a truck man so therefore I chose to get my taco. It gets done what I need it to get done and for that I love it. Best truck I have ever owned speaking of an all around er. All in all if your not happy with the new 16 specs and performance then don't get one. Last I checked no one twist your arms to make your purchases. In closing tacomas have proven themselves over the years on all or should I say most aspects so I don't offend anyone so they really had no reason the change much over the years. I'm pretty positive now with the new Colorado out and GM has finally figured out how to put a midsize truck together, Toyota technitions will do their best to stay at the top of the list of vehicles we are talking about. Will it be with the 16? Maybe, maybe not. If you don't like the 16 then wait for the 17, 18 or even the 19's haha. Like I said I'm sure that Toyota will try to find a way to stay at the top of the mid sized truck fleet. In all aspects of life you always have to give a little to get a little. Me personally would still like to see the diesel Tacoma here in America and also the VW diesel truck. Then I bet people's heads would just spin right off of their shoulders. Lmao. Sorry for the long lost it just makes my day reading my alert updates on this thread everyday. Like I said before I'm not a guru of all the hp/torque specs but I do do my own maintenance and the whole 9 yards. As long as the truck I own today is still holding strong and performing the way it does today @ 300,000, which is my goal. I will be a happy man and no feelings will be lost for me.

I will make myself more clear here. When the word first came out about the v8 cummins the ram guys I know freaked out. It's like a rumor you hear until you find out the facts. That's all I was saying. They/the people I know said they would never buy another ram if the switched from the I6. Wasn't trying to get into a pissing battle but I guess you just took what I said the wrong way. Hopefully I have cleared it up for you.

Oh, that would be my old flat head six Military Power wagon with max torque at 1,400 rpm and max rpm around 2,800 rpm. At 6,000 lbs empty and 90 horsepower, it is not speedy, very slow on the 0-60 times, since with the stock 5.83 gears, it tops out around 45 mph.

However, if horsepower is torque x rpm, the easiest way to get more power is to raise the rpm.

The 2GR-FSE is a 9+% increase over the 2GR-FE. Regardless, how you made you logical leap to equated that with your "truth" of "is not enough to compete with 4.0L 1GR" is a little fuzzy (especially when the 2GR-FE puts out up to 280HP and 260ftlbs...

How the truck drives is based off of the final gear ratio, not just the rear axel ratio. Also, keep in mind its probably just an option; like the Ram with the Hemi and 4.56 gears, Toyota probably wanted to make a fun truck that can kick up some dirt.

I cant believe people are complaining that they need to rev to higher to get decent power.

I dont see a problem for that my current car needs to pass 8,000rpm to get into the fun spot.

Like BlueT said all is in the gearing.

    honda S2000?

I can't think of many cars that redline that high, yet past it.

Naa 2009 Civic SI. It cuts at 8600, 300 more than the factory stock limit. Now it can touch 60mph in second gear without problems.
Pretty amazing how a good combination of the right gearing can make a torqueless car competitive. Mine did 14.2 @ 98 a few years ago.
Now after a few more tweaks I'm confident it will break into the 13's.

If toyota does the right gearing on the 3rd gen tacoma it will surprise a lot of the competition.

    BTW...
Honda have a few more USDM cars that can rev over 8000 stock
    1999-2000 Civic SI (B16 Engine)
Acura Integra Type R (B18C5 Engine)
Acura RSX Type S (K20A2 or K20Z1 Engines)
    2006-2011 Civic SI (K20Z3 Engine)

Toyota's 2ZZ engine in some models and years can rev over 8000 too stock.

Also, I think people are also forgetting the weight factor. Even if it only sheds a handful of pounds, just 270hp may make the '16 Taco faster 0-60 than the GM Twins (7.3 sec for 4x4 Canyon DCSB if I recall)

I'm really not disappointed in the new numbers at all. The truck will be lighter and more aerodynamic, with 35 more horsepower and about the same torque as before, all matched with new gearing. I am highly confident this truck will outperform the Gen 2 in every aspect, even with the smaller engine

Where did you get this? The peak HP is going to be much higher. That is pretty much known but the torque might be the same or lower but at higher rpm's. So the graphs should look much different? IE at lower rpms the 16 should be a lot lower?

Dont forget the superior B16 in the Del sol which actually revs slightly higher than the 99-00 Si!

I google image searched the TIS 1GR-FE (single VVTi) torque curve and plotted it in Excel. Then I took what we "know" of the peak HP and peak torque number and plotted them. Then I filled in the gaps to show how the bottom of the torque curve could be stronger than the current 1GR despite where the torque peaks. The 1GR peaks in the middle and isn't particularly level above or below that.

Of course, my speculation could be totally wrong and the new engine may not have a very flat curve. My bet, though, is that they used the D4-S and VVTi tuning to keep the low end strong rather than push for high HP numbers like the 2GR-FSE in the IS350. Again, just speculation and my way of showing that there is no need to get all bent out of shape just yet.

Right! The power numbers for this truck look very similar to the current Nissan Frontier, and that thing is pretty dang quick, although their real world MPG is horrific.

Just jump straight to the LFA, which revs to 10,000 RPM stock out of the 4.8 V10 (highest and fastest to redline production car to this date).

If the Tacoma engine is based of the 2GR FSE, power curve should look similar to this:
    2grfse-2_1df0ad1915df2f04f14c28d9d061c617cc9a9cf6.jpg

    1GR (shows 285ftlbs :notsure:):

That was back in 2005 when they did those ratings based off of 91 octane fuel
