So why did you go with a 3rd Gen over a 2nd gen?

Just basically trying to figure out if I should spend $28k on a double cab 2015, $31k on a used 2017 double cab or buy a brand new 2018.

What do you regret about buying a 2nd/3rd gen?

What color did you choose, and do you regret it?

What trim level did you choose and do you regret it?

Thanks for any info in advance guys, can’t wait to join the Tacoma team!

I upgraded from a 09 trd sport 4dr with the long bed to a 16 trd sport 4dr with the long bed in white. I picked the 16 because of the technology (entune with nav, Xm radio ect) I liked the look better, the keyless entry and push start and the overall fact it was brand new. The thing I do miss is the 4.0L V6 , the 3.5L paired with the 6 speed transmission gets annoying (like trying to merge on the highway and I stomp on it and the truck hesitates for a second before screaming away..but in the meantime the car I just cut off almost slams into the rear of me lol

Buying a used 3yr old truck of a 13yr old design to save $3k on a brand new one... is the sort of thing people who are bad at math do.

Make sure you get the 7yr 6.5% financing too!

    I regret nothing.

Haha, you have a good point, especially when they’re offering 0% apr, $0 maintenance for two years and 0 payments for 90 days.

    Good call

I’ve had them both. My regret with the 3rd gen was not getting the manual transmission I wanted from the start. I’ve got it now and I don’t think I’d go back to a second gen. The interior and technology is much better in the third gen Tacoma.

The fix for the acceleration issue is to use the ECT button.

Since I wanted the 2.7L 4x4 5spd, there was no difference in powertrain between 2nd/3rd gen. Wasn’t going to save much money going 2nd gen, and buying new meant full warranty and id be the only owner.

It came to light later that 2017 would be the last year of 4cyl 5spd trucks from Toyota in the US, so I’m now confidant in its future classic status :D

Zero regrets, hope you find the perfect truck!

It makes no sense to me to pay $25k for a used truck with 100k miles that has technology from 10 years ago when you can pay $8-10k more for a new one.

I looked into used 3rd gen Tacos and couldn't find any for prices that were worthwhile. Your experience will be the same. Tacos hold their value irrationally.

I prefer the 2nd Gen. I truly was excited about the 3rd Gens when I was truck hunting. But, I got impatient and bought one of the last 2015's so to speak. I'm very, very glad I did.

    1) I have a bigger motor.
    2) My differential problems are because I modified it... not because Toyota can't build diffs right anymore.
    3) My transmission doesn't need an update to work properly.
    4) My front end looks nicer.
    5) The 2nd Gens were cheaper than the 3rd Gens are.
    6) Dealers seem to have more used 3rd Gens these days than 2nd Gens.

LOL Except $8k-$10k buys a LOT of tech upgrades, lift, tires, wheels...

6.5%? Was that a sarcastic joke or are you being serious?

Who pays 6.5% on a vehicle?

More like paying $8-10k for 100k less miles of wear from another owner.

Why sink $8-10k in tech upgrades, lift, tires, wheels into a truck that's 10 years old off the gate? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

    Credit scores I guess.

I walked in, no sales or promos running, and we were talking 1.9% from the get go. Over the two years I paid the truck off I didn't have to pay a whole lot in interest thankfully.

Still should have asked for better! haha

    1. No regrets with either my 2014 or my current 2017. I wasn't happy with my 2014's lack of tech and craptastic 1980s interior, but the truck itself was awesome and I loved it. Got a new 2017 for the tech and sunroof.

2.MGM both times. Love the color. I will say if it had been available in 2017 I'd have gotten Cement - it looks awesome in person!

    3. TRD OR with tech packages - full boat here! Tacoma World is full of threads "How can I get my truck to have the toys that TRD already has" - skip that drama and just get the toys factory direct! If you are going to live with your truck for the next 5-10 years get what YOU want.

    Just my $0.02.

It was both, unfortunately. Nobody with < 650 credit score is getting 0% anything. There are a lot of people with real shit credit driving around in new cars who took a deal like that or worse. They are what keep the repo men in business. No kidding... 84 months at 4% https://www.nationwide.com/84-month-auto-loan.jsp

And just in case any of you silly bastards went "Sweet! An 84 month car loan, I'ma get the PRO now!" lemme stop ya' right there...

I've heard of 72 months... but never 84 months. Good heavens.

Have you ever owned a 1980's vehicle?

    Just curious.

The 2nd Gen is certainly dated. But 1980's? No.

I once owned a 1980 Nissan 280ZX. And my 2nd Gen is way nicer inside.

Lightly used Tacomas are too expensive for me to justify buying used. The 3rd gen is a nicer truck.

I bought a new 16 SR5 and only regret not getting the OR only a little.
