Hey! I tried replicating your front and rear camera setup from your YouTube video, and I know you kind of explained it already, but I’m still having trouble understanding a few parts, especially with how the wiring should go.

On my setup, both the front and backup cameras only turn on when I shift into reverse, and I have to manually open the AV video app. I’m trying to get the backup camera to auto-activate in reverse, and ideally have both cameras stay powered and viewable at any time, to also be able to use the record feature.

Here’s what I think you did, let me know if I’m wrong:

Backup Camera Wiring tail light side:

    Grounded the black wire
The purple wire — instead of leaving it disconnected — did you connect it to the red/blue wire that the red wire was originally spliced into?
THEN connected the red wire directly to the solid red wire from the reverse light (not the red/blue one shown in the video)
I’m not sure if I’m mixing that part up, but yeah, where should the red wire be moved or spliced into where it was?

    Head Unit Side:

Purple goes to the orange "BACK" wire
    Black is grounded
Red is spliced in with the red wire from the front cam? ← This part has me confused

    Front Camera:
The front cam has two extra red wires labeled something like “backup camera power,” and I’m not sure where they’re supposed to go. That might be why neither camera stays powered unless I’m in reverse.

Any help would be really appreciated. I feel like I’m super close, but something about the way I’m powering the cameras (or handling those extra reds) isn’t quite right. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I did thank you! So here’s what I ended up doing:

From the reverse wiring in the taillight area, I grounded the black wire and spliced the red, purple, and red/blue wires together so the camera would activate when the truck is in reverse.

From the head unit side, I spliced the red wire into the ACC red wire from the head unit, grounded it with the black wire from the head unit harness, and connected the purple wire to the orange "back" wire from the head unit.

For the front camera, I noticed it had an extra male power prong, and the head unit had a matching female connector labeled “camera/video power,” so I connected those. Everything seems to be working now. The reverse camera only activates when I’m in reverse, which is what I wanted most. The front camera stays on and records fine.

I did have a couple of questions:

    1) Is there a way to make the front camera start recording automatically, or do I have to manually hit "record" in the video app every time? I installed it mainly to use it like a dash cam.

    2) Is there a way to improve the video quality of the reverse camera? In your video, you mentioned holding the screen to adjust settings, but I only saw basic video options like contrast. The quality looks like 720p or lower, even though the camera is supposed to be 1080p.

Thanks again for the help and for responding to my comment here and on YT.

For the front camera, I have yet to figure out how to use it as a dash camera. It doesn’t seem to have logic in the headunit to remember to auto start and cycle clips when memory is full. I would recommend a regular dash camera for this instead.

For the reverse camera, no unfortunately. Since it’s being displayed on a big screen, some resolution is lost. If it was on a 5” screen I’m sure it’d be a lot better. Holding down when in reverse and adjusting the settings will help a ton.
