I've got a Bubba Rope soft shackle and it's really great. Quick, light and I would presume much safer. I actually haven't used it in a recovery situation yet, but have made a couple of utility type pulls. One was winching a 20' ocean container off of a flatbed trailer.

Some of them look like a diamond knot. That's what I do for my paracord lanyards, and it looks similar.

I've been using the carrick bend mostly, though I've done some with a star knot. The star knot is much more involved but looks pretty cool when it's all said and done. In reality, any good stopper knot that builds up and can't collapse under strain will work. I wouldn't trust a figure 8 knot for example, because the diameter of the knot isn't much bigger than the line you're tying it out of. Here's a writeup I did on another site after I had a chance to try out one that I'd made:

There's also a Smittybilt version. I compared it to a Bubba Rope Gator Jaw side by side in a 4 Wheel Parts store earlier in the week. It seemed to be decent quality but not as nice as the Bubba Rope. The Smittybilt was made from a thicker, coarser feeling rope and didn't slide as smoothly and easily as the Bubba Rope. For half the price it's about what I expected it to be.

Oh cool I'll add Smittybilt to the list. Its always nice to see in person the difference between product before purchasing. I'm not sure why I'm just finding out about these soft shackles, my recovery bag could have been a few pounds less loan ago.

Are people replacing their D rings for these or are people just buying these because they do not have any recovery gear. Seems like a cool idea but seems like durability would be an issue if you use them in areas with sharp edges and get them muddy and they rot etc.

It's another tool to put in your recovery kit. They are not the best option for every recovery but they serve a good purpose.

Anyone have any pics of these in use? I'd like to see how you hook up to them. How to attach the winch line or recovery strap. Or, if you attach a D-ring to them?

These are substitutes for D rings so you wouldn't use both. Youtube has some good vids.

Check out K72 Rope by Guardian of Bravery. They add an industrial coating to the stopper knot to prevent creep on the knot when doing recoveries. https://guardianofbravery.com/store/

Looks like PlastiDip. Same stuff they used to put on tool handles, and some people paint on cars now.

I thought soft shackles weren't supposed to hold energy like that. I expected it to just break and drop to the ground. That thing was apparently holding some energy when it snapped.
