Yes the studs Toyota is using is aluminum they are stretching when the 3rd member is torqued down. Solution is ARP steel studs with a collar, new nylon lock nuts and washers.

Not saying your tech is wrong, but that seems illogical to use aluminum studs there due to the following: Galvanic Corrosion

Maybe they're using below grade 5 steel studs and have the same sheer strength as aluminum...:notsure:

Hello from Ruff Cobb in Durango, CO. About a month ago I introduced the Service Manager at Durango Motor Company, Jonathan Frazier, to the ECU TSB described in this thread.

Jonathan applied the TSB to his own Tacoma (AT) and to his father's Tacoma, also AT. They were both satisfied. I then had my 2018 TRDOR MT scanned & 58-18 was applied.

I spoke with Jonathan yesterday & explained the difficulties many were having with this application & inquired if he minded that I posted that Durango Motor Company would apply the TSB.

Jonathan replied that would be fine, they had performed many ECU TSBs on a daily basis & had several Tacomas in the shop for that purpose currently. I hope this advisory helps forum members in the 4 corners area.

That they are low grade, they will yield to 30ft lbs and sheer. I have bought the studs to send to ARP.

But there doesn't seem to be a motivation beyond incompetence among any of these groups. I'm sure there is at least one Toyota engineer that knows that this applies to MTs, but maybe he or she left the company, is on the bottom of the hierarchy...

Well, Durango isn't too far from Albuquerque. Both the Albuquerque and Santa Fe dealers won't even discuss it.

Are you just taking in the pdf for the TSB? My dealer didn't even get past the first page where it says automatics even when I told him that it also applies to MTs.

Exactly. Or, the planning process got hosed up. There's a lot of polish on that update, so there had to be a group or few involved (software, cert, mgmt approval, etc.) esp as it was said that MT ECUs are a different beast than AT ECUs? In my experience, the manuals folks are separate, so there was probably some miscommunication on the release and now corp CS is trying to interpret all this without really knowing much about ECU IDs and the raving lunatics who purchase one of the few remaining MTs? Ha!

You want to at least get to that table on Page 3 of the TSB to point out the ECU IDs and take along the screen dump from the OP since you and Ruggybuggy both have 04B70 2018s.

    Oh man…
Sub'd! I thought I'd see if there was anything in here about a surge because it's been annoying as a mofo. 96 pages later... I've taken a pic of all the WO's people have posted, going to give it a shot. I'm REALLY glad it's a known issue and it's not just how the truck is. Damn it's frustrating driving this thing right now

Makes me think of John Delorean building the GTO behind GM's back without them knowing, maybe Toyota does not allow any R&D money for Manuals but there are a few enthusiasts in the company sneaking out stuff behind their back.

Very possible. That could be why CS is a bit freaky about it considering emissions requirements and such?
