It is a true survivor with just shy of 300k miles. Mechanically it is in amazing condition, the paint is the original Toyota red without clear coat. It shines up well, but has "patina" (meaning it has signs of 300k miles). The frame is in excellent condition.

I had the opportunity of going to look at his vehicle last night. The truck is all that Dan says it is. I spend about 40 minutes going through the entire vehicle. I paid extra attention at inspecting the entire under carriage. I was amazed how clean the frame and under body is. I notice some small surface rust in one area but it was just that, surface rust. This could be taken care of with a wire brush and then treating the area with a rust preventative. Again, it was small and treatable. The body of the vehicle is in good shape. Some paint fading as expected on a 1996 Tacoma, but overall it looked good. The interior of the cabin is in good shape, clean. No tears on the seats or carpeting. The suspension system looks tight and felt tight when I drove the truck. It shifted good and handled as expected. This truck appears to be built up to handle off roading. I personally would have purchased it but I do not do much off roading. This truck needs to be owned bu an off road enthusiast. Since I was only a short drive from his home, I wanted to look at it and maybe purchase it. Since I did not, I wanted to share my opinion and make a positive recommendation. Before I climbed underneath the truck with a creeper, I would have expected some significant rust or corrosion, Again I was amazed how clean the frame, body and other areas are. Just me sharing.

I'm not really sure.... I honestly find more joy in working on trucks than driving them most of the time. I've got a long list of past (nearly all Toyota) projects! They keep my interest for 5-10 years and then I sell them and move on.

I've got too many cars already, and only one my 16yo can drive.

 

Man this is a sweet truck. Does the rear axle have the stock gearing or is it modified? What is a dual transfer case?

The rear axle has stock gearing.

A dual transfer case is the gear reduction half of an older Toyota transfer case adapted between the transfer case and transmission. It allows for "double low" gear when the tcase and the crawl box are both shifted into low. It is really only useful when offroad.

It requires an additional shifter up top.

 

Tell us more about this. So you essentially made your own dual t-case using parts from an old Toyota?

 

No, it's a Trail Gear adapter. I bought the adapter and built the crawl box. All dual cases use the gear reduction half of a gear driven case.

It's cheaper to build than to buy a complete unit from somewhere like Marlin Crawler. It isn't too challenging to do. I used a new 23 spline input shaft and new bearings.
