I thought that too, but bearings don't making a ton of noise some times and no noise others, unless the amount of load they are experiencing is changing...

The alternators load would change based on how much the battery needs to be fully charged. Once it is charged, the alt doesnt meed to work as hard...so it gets quiet.

I mean, I am open to auggestions, but I am pretty sure the alternator is the case. Suddenly sounding like you have a supercharger seems to be a common observation for alts that are on their last leg....thats what mine sounds like.

Again, open to suggestions. But thats my thought process.

Next time you hear the whining noise, unplug the field connector from the back of the alternator. if the noise goes away then it's for sure a bad alternator.

Go to Harbor Freight and drop 6 bucks on a mechanics stethoscope, run the engine when the noise is present an then pinpoint it.
You can also take the belt off and spin all the pulleys to see if one has more resistance or is rougher then the others.

I would check the alternator with a volt meter to absolutely be sure its the alternator https://youtu.be/LGB6ZEjGm7Q

His alternator will pass the voltmeter test. The problem he's complaining about is a NOISE, not a lack of charging.

Yeah. Won't hurt anything. Just won't charge while its unplugged.
But don't plug it back in while running.

If its making a noise, have you tried pouring oil into it? You can hose it with something like ATF. If it makes the noise go away, then keep driving it. If it doesn't, then its probably not the alternator.

    Yep.

Alot of times that whining noise is the magnetic field getting fucked up inside the alt. Removing that connector takes the magnetism away and removes the load

    I thought you were joking...

Dumping ATF into an alternator sounds like a really bad idea...

So what do you think that oil is going to do to a noisy mechanical device that is regularly bathed in salty road sludge?

Think about that for another minute or two and when you come up with a better answer, add your next reply.
