Not in southern CA where going 5 mph or slower out on our desert trails is viewed as a “handicap” off road wise.

most people who own a Tacoma are not going to turn their vehicle into a pre runner is the point I’m making. With the right amount of money you can make any vehicle into anything.

I also think a good set of shocks/springs/leads you can travel faster than 5mph on a desert trail. A fully built pre runner is unnecessary for 99% of people

I wouldn’t worry about this guys comments, OP. Go enjoy your new ride. I would advise you to join the 4Runner forum, but it isn’t as fun as TW. I also own a T4R in addition to my 2nd gen. Night and day difference but still as useful and reliable. We usually take it out everywhere as it seats us all best and it’s extremely comfortable. Also fits all our beach and river stuff, snow gear, strollers, storage containers, etc. Some of this stuff I wouldn’t want just sitting out in the bed of my truck, especially for the longer river trips. Heck, we’ll be going camping in it in a few weeks and taking the doggo’s too. Can I do that in my truck? Yea, but I rather be comfortable. Why not just get a van? This is our “van” :transformer:

Yeah, why do they even make 4Runners, when they already make a Tacoma? Some things make absolutely no sense whatsoever....

OP, enjoy your new ride all the same, looks sweet, congrats!

The current 4Runner is one of the highest quality vehicles ever built in my opinion; You're gonna get way more than 125K miles out of it!

We haven't even gotten into the superior powertrain in the 4Runner. That might be a bit of a sensitive point though! LOL... We had an 07 with the 4.7 and it was a dream on road trips. Not as comfortable as the Tahoe we have now but the current ride will not carry us 115k miles only requiring routine maintenance and an alternator once.

Here comes @2000prerunner23 to tell us how ignorant our 4Runner is with a family of four again.

2021 might be the last year for the Venture Series. I see Lunar Rock is available on all trims except SR5 and Limited. I thought LR would have been limitted to the Trail Edition.

Nice 4runner! If I ever get a SUV I'm sure it'll be a 4runner. To bad your thread turned into a dumpster fire though.

    Updates to come...
Hahah, I just got done replying on another post about keeping a the taco over the 4R. When comparing 3rd gen tacos with 5th gen 4Rs majority of the interior dimensions are in favor of the taco (I didn't see what your year/gen your taco was). Both are bullet proof, and have great off road chops. I do prefer the engine & tranny setup in the 4R, but for me it was the utility of the truck bed that got me back in the seat of a Taco (have owned 2 tacos ('94 and currently a '14) and 1 4R ('10)). As well, the current 3rd gen taco gets better mileage (if that really matters).

Regardless - just funny I came across this when posting about this on another thread, and totally congrats on the purchase! The most important thing is that you're happy with your vehicle and that it puts a stupid grin on your face every time you drive it. I loved every second in my 4R (there are times I wish I still had it so I could hand it off to my oldest here in a couple years), but haven't looked back since I got my Taco - it's easier to load the 2-3 kiddos + our mtbs + camping gear in the bed :D

    congrats again!!! :)

Ha!! We are exactly the opposite. 4Runner has a ton more room. But it misses the giddy-up of the Tacoma. lol. The 4Runner is a dog when it comes to go. Sex appeal?? Coin toss. Functionality is objective depending on what you are doing.

I appreciate you!!! Truly a non bias view. Honestly I wish I still had the truck. Even as a 2wd. But just functional for family, 4Runner is fantastic

Similar to others, I just (yesterday) decided to jump on the ridiculous offers I was getting from my dealer for trade-in values on my 2018 TRD Sport Tacoma and ordered a 2022 4Runner. I am very happy with my decision. Less happy about the indeterminant wait now. But, maybe another North East snow season in the Tacoma rather than a new 4Runner is a good thing (yea, I know I'm rationalizing). As for me, I drove a 4Runner in the 90's, switched to a 2gen Tacoma for continued Manual transmission. Upgraded to the 3gen and conceded the Automatic I chose. Put caps on both to keep stuff dry. Haul all my tall, dirty or stuff (like a pair of dual sports) on a trailer. And realized I could happily return to the 4Runner.

    IMG_2471.jpg

But, as luck would have it, today while picking some stuff up at a garden center I spotted this:

    IMG_2667_LI.jpg

A Toyota HiAce with 4wd, a turbo 3.0 l diesel engine, and what seems to be some customization to make it a comfy family vacation cruiser. Did I order one day too soon? Nah. Wouldn't fit my lifestyle, and I'm not tall enough to throw a pair of kayaks up on that tall roof rack. But, food for thought. Owner described a specialty importer in VA he bought it through.
