I just recently purchased a 2019 SR5 tacoma and it has the key and fob all in one. The problem is I need just a key without the fob ,you see I do metal detecting at the beach and i'm in the water sometimes up to my neck and I cant take a fob out in the water I need a plain old key with chip to hand on a lanyard around my neck..The last truck I had was a 2011 tacoma with a seperate key and remote and I just used the key to open the door and the ignition. I called the dealer and he said he could make another key just like I got now also I didn't get the number plate with the code on it the salesman is working to get me one. Anyone know if a old style key with a chip can be cut for a 219 tacoma?

A locksmith should be able to cut you a regular metal key that will only work in the doors. You could keep the fob key in the truck and manually lock/unlock with the spare.

I would think you could get the "old fashioned" key for door unlocking, keeping your chip key locked in the glove box.

@grandpa you should be able to get an H key with the transponder in the black head that would be able to get wet, that is my plan eventually. still need to see if I can program the key myself but it is low priority

I ran across a item called a hitchsafe ,it goes in the trailer hitch receiver has a combination lock I think I may get one of these I can store a spare house key also they have them on ebay and Amazon check it out.

Ordered a blank H-Key on eBay for my 17 and had it cut locally and programmed with techsteam myself.

the official way to get/use techstream is from Toyota at: techinfo.toyota.com there are unofficial copies available to download if you search around, check threads on software updates. Cheap Cables about $20 (some with unofficial techsteam) can be found on eBay. If you happen to have the OVTune that cable also works with techstream.

    All-factory options at this point.
Takes a few steps, but you could turn off your fob, put it in the storage box in the truck bed (assuming you have a lockable topper on your Tacoma like the three part folding version) and then just lock your tailgate.

I needed a key I could get wet while surfing.

Had the dealership make me a regular old fashion key for $10.

Not sure if it's true or not, but the parts dude told me I could only use it for the doors and tailgate on my 18 SR5. He said If I tried to start the truck with it, it would screw up the computer or something.

Said if that happened I'd have to have it towed to the dealership, and have everything reset at the cost of about a grand.

Why don’t you just buy a small dry bag and put the keyfob in it then stuff it in your pocket. People do this for all kinds of water sports for their electronics and have no issues.

I've been doing some searching on this ..... Although I could not definitively find confirmation, it appears that the Toyota Immobilizer later versions (i.e. late 3rd generation Tacos), not only use chip technology, but the system is programmed for "tampering". Or otherwise stated, If the system thinks someone is trying to defeat the system (i.e., trying multiple unrecognized or non chipped keys, it may shut the system down and needs to be "unlocked" by the dealer or someone withe the correct software/ info .... SO, My comment is.... if you do mess/add keys, etc. with the system - be sure you get it right on the first couple tries or you may be up sh*ts creek without a truck . So take Care ! JMO
