I have '18 access cab. I got two FOB's when I bought it. To replace one of them is $300. To get a non-FOB key is $100. The dealership says Toyota allows only three spare keys (the two FOBs plus three extras). Is there another way to get extra keys. I was told by the dealership Home Depot will make spares. They don't, at east the ones near me. Any help appreciated.

Dealership made me a non chip key for $10.

Said to only use it for the tailgate and door. Said absolutely don't use it to start the truck.

Dealership tried twice to make me a non chip key to unlock the door only. Dealership was unable to to cut the key correct so I went to a Locksmith. He charged me $10 to cut a key and it worked on the 1st try.

Tractor Supply around here makes them for less than $100 last time I had a chip key copied. Wasn't a Toyota key though, not sure if that should matter as long as they have the blanks in stock.

Do you have a Push to start or H-Key(standard key)?

Home Depot does not have the machine to cut these keys. I work there and cut keys everyday.

Check other dealerships too. I got quoted like 240 for a new fob/programming. Locksmith quoted me 375 for it.

My Local Locksmith told me that if you try to use a non chip key/ wrong key in an ignition that's expecting the correct key chip - after a couple tries to start, the computer may think it's being stolen and lock up the security system and you may need to have the truck towed to the dealer to unlock the system ... Just repeating what I was told ...

Also, For my 2020 SR (no key less entry) I bought 1 chip (H) key on Amazon for $17 and had a locksmith (with the correct computer setup) cut the H key and program it's acceptance into the truck's computer - Plus had him make 2 non chip (all metal) door, tailgate and glove box only keys - cost was $60 !

Who would’ve thought that car manufacturers would have an ignition key racket.

Dealership told me the same thing.

I wanted a plain old key that I didn't have to worry about salt water ruining.

I stash my "real" keys. and take the plain key with me surfing.

Transponder keys are way to over priced. I dont plan on doing this on my tacoma, especially since the fob is built into the H key but on my old frontier I just wrapped some wire around the key and then around the ignition switch with a relay activation by the ignition wire. Allowed regular old cut keys to work. Sure it disabled the security but it was a beat up high mileage Frontier.

You can never underestimate the integrity of a new car dealer, when it comes to separating you from your hard earned money.
