Got a short hose extension and tube (Amazon) to allow me to check spare tire inflation without removing spare. < $10

get a 12v air pump and you might not ever need to use a spare and if you do you got an air pump with you

Various kits available on Amz. Can get them with 90-deg or 135-deg elbows too, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Z-oneMart-Valve-Extension-Compatible-Motorcycle/dp/B0BZPXYZPV/

If you go off road, better to deflate the spare completely for maximum puncture resistance. Carry a pump full-time. This well-proven small pump is on sale, fits in access cab under-seat bin: https://www.amazon.com/Viair-00088-88P-Portable-Compressor/dp/B005ASY23I/

Is this something that you install and leave on the valve? What's the likelihood the extension will leak? A worry for sure. It doesn't take much effort to drop the wheel so I can't see the value personally. Lowering the wheel occasionally also allows you to have the comfort that the mechanism is still functional.

I would flip the spare over so you can access the valve stem easily. This post does give me the idea to put a hose on my civic spare tire since has to be valve stem facing down so I can check pressure with some regularity instead of honestly maybe twice a year.
For the inflator, the vlair that is posted in a previous post is a damn good inflator.

This isn't a question. The short hose and tube are available at Amazon. Mine has valves, so all you have to do is screw it on.

The mounting of the spare underneath the truck is the worst possible location. Not only is it "out of sight, out of mind," it's difficult to remove when needed, and it's exposed to road hazards. I keep mine in the bed of the truck. Easily accessible, and easy to check for condition, including the air pressure.

No worries. Ran one for years on my 04 Highlander, as well as in the trunk of several vehicles, including the current 14 RAV, that only allow securing the wheel when the stem faces the floor.

In fact , I've moved the same extension across vehicles so its at least between 15 and 20 years old now

I partially agree. But in Houston, the UV from the Sun exposure, and potential theft are cons to the bed unless you have a bed cover.

I'm glad your system works for you. Everyone's needs are different, though. For me there is no way I could store mine in the bed, which I use frequently to transport stuff. In this regard, under the bed is the perfect location for me. I don't find it difficult to remove - the hardest part is digging out the cranking tools. I have a standard routine of checking all pressures monthly, so it's never forgotten. It does get a bit muddy/gritty but in close to 30 years under the truck, I've never had a spare tire damaged by road hazards. I have an occasional worry that the cable will break and I'll lose the tire so I do find the monthly check of the cable mechanism comforting. I think the current chain system is probably more robust.

Agreed. A spare in the bed would use up much of this already small bed.

In Wyo my frequent drives in mines and on oil field roads combined to cure me from using the the "under the bed" set-up. Not too bad during the warm month or two - but when the mud and gunk gets combined with ice - try changing a tire .......... Seemed to work best for me when standing upright directly behind the cab. Arizona has spoiled me - but I did flip the thing over to put the valve side down.
