Those are nice looking extractors. I like the shoulder to stop them from screwing in too far.

That's the worst part to hear OP... Sorry bro.

I think it's best the head should come off now anyway. I have a feeling you were 'shaving' the inside of the plug's threads and letting the shavings drop into the cylinder.

This is putting a twist on my 600 mile commute each week. Ok so when I remove the head what else should I look at replacing?

This may be a good opportunity to service your engine if time isn't an issue.

Eh, mine is too... But its cheap to keep running. Since your head is coming off I'd recommend having the valve clearances done too, the 4cyl is prone the exhaust valves tightening and cracking the head. Had to have my head replaced because of that.

I suffer from one is none, two is better so I have ten of most tools type items. :)

I would have rather just traded up to a newer Tacoma then to dump money into this 04 that I don't really like.:( I need cruise control and a V6.

3.4l swap? Can't go wrong with that. They're bulletproof engines.. damn near literally.

There is one more option that I have used, but don't know how well it will work for you. You take a chance on slight damage to the threads, but you'll want to tap the threads in any case. If you do enough damage to the thread that you can't pass a compression test, then you can always use a helicoil repair in any case.
Can you get a straight pick or some other strong, thin device between the plug thread and the cylinder head threads? If so, drive it down through the thread between the mating surface. Then pry on it to create a groove (think of creasing it toward the center of the hole). Then use a needle nose plier to grab the crease and twist it out (unthread it). Sometime just the act of driving it through will release enough "pressure" to allow it easily unthread. I've also cut the metal at the crease and then just rolled it up around a needle nose pliers and pulled it out.

If it works, retap the hole to clean it up, use a small bore vacuum tool to clean the top of the cylinder and you are good to go. It's a last ditch effort before you pull the head anyway.

Oh. If you are in doubt. Take it to a machine shop and have them do it.

I'm not so sure I shouldn't just put a rebuilt engine in while I'm at this juncture?
