had this happen to my Honda CBR, I quite literally drove a removable screw driver head down into the broken plug just enough to get a bite and slowly backed it out.. this was in 2007 and the threads and screwdriver are still sitting in the top of my tool box as a reminder.. I'll post a pic when I get to the house.

There is an age old trick to make the BEST penetrating fluid. Cheap spray bottle 50/50 mix of Acetone and Auto Trans Fluid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CESDxCloCoQ
Works every time. But looking at the pics, it looks like you may have a worn ring which is bypassing and also allowing oil up in top of the piston. This is leading to carbon build up and is causing that cylinder to burn hotter than the others and is probably what led to the problem you are having with your spark plug. It may not be TOO bad, but you may want to look at addressing it now.

On the other hand, you may be fine for many thousands of miles if you don't too. I would try to extract it myself now that you have better access to it before I took it to a shop to remove. But I know what my skill set is, not your or what your tolerance for risk is as well.

well, ultimately, it's your choice what to do. if you can afford it at this point, go ahead. why not? But if youre even the slightest bit tight on money, just take the head in to be tested, cleaned, and resurfaced. this is at least something you want to do while the head is out.

Did you decide to go all the way and do an engine rebuild?

My wife picked up the head from the machine shop, they had to drill it out the #2 spark plug. I'll post the pics when I get back into town tonight.

Who do you recommend for a gasket set?

I don't know if you need to, but I would replace them, just to be thorough.

If you look at the electrode, it had been compromised for a bit, that would contribute to the carbon build up. Anti-sieze is your friend.

except for the fact that NGK and Denso specifically say not to use anti seize.
