what a awesome link.. this is about everything that could be wrong with your sparkplugs. most of them are pretty extreem, but at least you get an idea of what could be wrong, and then you go from there to fix it. i would assume with 1/2 of those examples you would have check engine lights before you found out you had a funny looking plug.

    Great response guys.
So much can be read from used plugs.
Full throttle operation then shut off the engine and coast to a stop (carefully of course) can make the read even better, esp. in racing applications. I have done this when I was drag racing my bike but for daily driver vehicles just reading the used plugs is good enough.

I'm thinking it's like MelonLabeTaco said "Why reinvent the wheel". Toyota knows their crap!! Thank you all for your input .

I should have mentioned my reason for this thread.....
I am experiencing slower starts and poor MPH. Purchased used and probably has old plugs. I'll change the plugs and hopefully not revisit this topic. Thanks again

Poor MPG? You should clean your MAF and throttle body. Extremely easy to do.

i just changed my plugs. got it done in under an hour. more like 45 mins. i measured my old plugs. almost .06.

i adjusted my new plugs to about .038, just a hair under .04. started up great. have to wait and see what happens in the cold morning. i am happy camper.

not a lot of wear on my plugs but gap was huge...

so 30-40 miles later, no check engine light... and this morning starting my truck up, it didn't skip a beat like it did yesterday. prior to changing my plugs, in the morning on a cold start i used to have a hesitation, almost like missing a beat, after maybe 1 or 2 cylinders into the crank cycle, the truck would fire up... now that is gone. still think my gap might be a little too close, but no CEL's and its running good so im going to let it ride until i have any issues.
