Speedo calibration on 3rd Gen Tacoma

I was not aware. Looks like RC has either started making their own or have put their name on another one. Back when I bought my Hypertech, they were the only one who made an in-line calibrator that worked on the Taco. After I bought the Hypertech, I discovered RC started reselling Hypertech at a lower price. Now I don't know what to think, sorry.

 

No worries. Just curious if there is any reason I should lighten my wallet by almost twice as much.

 

I just emailed Hypertech and asked if they know anything about RC's new in-line calibrator and why it's almost $100 less. We'll see if they respond...

How old is your RC calibrator? I know for sure the older ones are made by Hypertech. The newer RC's look a little different.

I'm thinking about getting the RC setup as well.

 

Just ordered mine as well. Going to swap the cluster plastic as well since it's scratched to hell and back (truck is CPO).

 

I'm about to do the OVTune (tonight). Do you know if the RC (hypertech) product will mess with the tune at all? Mainly the bold underlined one worries me. From RC's website:

It will not be a problem.

 

Maybe you're the best person to ask this. Does the Hypertech calibrator work the same for both manual and auto transmissions? I was hearing anecdotal feedback that the manuals track speed and mpg differently from the autos. Any feedback on this would be appreciated!

Update:

Programmed and installed, as well as replaced my speedo scratchy-plastic.

Took about 5min.

Truck is about -.5mph or less @65mph from what Google maps says.

I used the tire size for programming.

Everything works great

 

I just installed the rc unit. I feel like they could charge about $20 less if they didn’t include the ridiculously unnecessary case for the unit that will never be removed from the truck.

Did you use a tape measure or did you go off the size on what the manufacturer said like 34.6

Accuracy of the speedometer is going to vary over the life of a tire because as tires wear they change size. A tire that is new typically has about 13/16th of tread, and they are pretty used up by the time that is down to 4/16ths. This is 9/16ths of usable tread all the way around the tire - so measuring the diameter includes this tread twice at 18/16ths total tread. Long story short, the tire has lost over an inch of height over its usable life, with the size changing all along the way.

Your speedo is only going to be 100% accurate for a very small window of time when the size of the tire is exactly what was used to calibrate it. Manufacturers typically have the speedo display slightly high rather than low.

 

I haven't done it with my taco yet, but when I adjusted the speedo on my old silverado I had by far the best results by entering in what I physically measured the tire to be at proper inflation.

 

I had complained to my dealer about my odometer reading fast along with the speedo when i brought it in for its first service last month. Whatever they did it now reads the same as my tundra did.

 

Very curious what your dealer did. According to Toyota, there is no tire size setting/adjustment.
