I didn't buy this particular one, but I've tried others and none of them worked. They either sent the wrong one, or they fell apart installing it. I just broke down and bought an OEM one from the dealer. I got reamed, but it worked perfectly. Good luck!

^^^ This was my approach, too. I wasted the $50 or whatever it was on Amazon for a "cheap" one just to have it fail less than a year later. Bought OEM Toyota and haven't had a problem since (~3 years).

According to an urgent dealer bulletin obtained by News Corp Australia, Toyota has “serious concerns about the safety of these parts” after internal testing in Japan found there were four ways they could fail to deploy an airbag in a crash.

Toyota Australia has declined to comment on the matter.

But the dealer bulletin issued over the weekend says there is a “high likelihood of insufficient conductivity to support airbag deployment electrical current” and “significant risk of airbag non deployment in an accident”.

The technical bulletin says the counterfeit part does not have gold plated connectors, the crimping of the cable is not strong enough and it does not use copper wire as per the genuine article. The plastic locking tabs are also “poorly formed” or misaligned.

As is the case with most new cars, the airbag connector — the link between the car’s power source and the airbag in the steering wheel — must be replaced every time an airbag is deployed in a crash.

The genuine part costs about $300 wholesale, while the fake part is estimated to cost as little as $50.

I replaced my original when it failed 4 years ago with a OEM from the dealer. This time I went cheap considering I had two OEM ones fail in 9 years.

Clock spring isn't something you want to cheap-out on, it controls the airbag.

I've never used an oem SC. I've had no issue using the Asian versions.

I don't know where they are getting their data, but I can not tell the difference between oem and asian.

Of the 5 I've changed in the last 20 years, there has been zero failures.

As for the research they claim they did, I call bullshit. If their was a continuity issue, the SRS ECU would give you an air bag light.

The clock spring and the air bags are the "dumb" part of the suplimental restraint system. The ECU is the part that makes sure everything is operational.

Sorry, but the eBay versions OP posted work just fine. I don't agree with the rest of the posters.

Does this work on models with steering wheel controls?

How difficult are these to replace? I think mine is on its way out, when it's cold out and I turn the wheel I can hear it chattering

Id compare it to bring similar to changing out a stereo head unit.

Just remember to disconnect the battery before starting.

Cool, will they throw an airbag light when they fail?

Yes, the light will come on if the ribbon cable is bad.
