pic#3 the shiny bare metal is where its bad, the rust colored dust is coming off the roller bearings inside from losing the seal to hold grease in.

How many miles ago was the center support replaced?

I wouldn't reccomend going back to this shop, I think they overcharged you on the center support part and the labor, and failed to inspect the other u-joint when their first recommendation was to replace the u-joints. But I'm not sure fixing the rear u-joint takes care of the noise you are experiencing. That could be it, but a some members have had aftermarket center support bearings fail on them with only a few hundred miles. I would almost go back and have them do the last one, then replace the center support with a Spicer if the noise persists. IMHO I think it will.

Either that or go to a trusted reputable shop and get a second hands on opinion. But the first shop should really try to make it right if they are a reputable place.

I just had the center support bearing replaced last week!
I took it to firestone that supposedly has a guarantee of "fixing it right the first time", so I think I'm going to bring it back into them and see what they say. If they give me a hard time and try to charge me a lot, I'll just take it somewhere else. I shouldn't have to pay for the labor this time right?

They might just replace the u-joint and charge you the $20 for the part, but I still think the noise is coming from the Anchor carrier bearing, and that should be replaced without labor for sure. You should only cover the cost of a replacement part over the original part cost. I'd pay someone else to replace it rather then pay them twice in two weeks to replace the same part.

Here is the link to the Spicer center support bearing: I wouldn't settle for replacing it with anything else.

My drive shaft is always squeaking or shaking under hard acceleration. Going just just get a tom woods when I get new tires and add power. Should hopefully end all the problems.

If you don't keep up with greasing they will fail.

If you drive that go slow and do not do any high speed driving. That joint could let go at any time, I wouldn't want to hear about you getting in wreck or that shaft causing someone else to.

I cannot believe that they didn't see this when doing the other two. The best rule of thumb is if one is bad they are all probably suspect and should be replaced.

    Too few to list.
See what I mean about shops taking advantage. I think franchise shops are mostly the ones doing it as independent shops rely on repeat business and word of mouth.

So true, a shop tried to charge my mom $700 to change brakes on a Subaru - and that was just for labor

That's amazing that they didn't catch that when you took it in and had them replace the Universals the first time. The slop from that joint must have been unreal.

Glad you got this problem solved,
I was having the same problem as you, I just greased the U joints and it seemed to get a little better but I definitely think I'm going to end up replacing them.

I ended up taking it to a place closer to my university so I could go to class while it was getting it done. Didn't want to have to deal with those idiots again. :p

It is possible the rear one was bad indeed, but I also saw nowhere in that invoice that it said balance or rebalance on there. Did you get this resolved OP?

Bad U joint. At the time Toyota had a warranty enhancement that covered it for free but I'm not sure if that's still going on
