    Thanks for chiming in, Brian.

Is there a specific year that would work best? Or just anything from 95-00?

    Thanks!

And everything else should work with the older style bearings?

Napa has koyo bearings in stock and I don't have any time to order. Going to pick one up today and try again. Also, probably going to get a new outer seal as they look to be quite a bit different.

This is the seal that gets pressed into the housing? I wonder if it’s the ‘new’ version that Toyota updated a few years into the 1st Gens.

No, the seal that's pressed into the backing plate. The ones off our later years won't do anything on these earlier style axles as they don't have that raised lip for the seal to ride in.

Seal thats pressed in the housing should be fine.

Gotcha! So if I ask for the outer seal from say a 2000, that should work with these shafts?

I think so, but not 100%.

I'll tell you after work today after blowing more money on parts and trying again.

All the other seals and retainers are the same, including the outer. the axle is just shaped different to reduce a stress angle for a possible point of breakage.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw that hard shoulder. It’s definitely a potential stress concentration point. Hopefully the 4340 helps overcome that.

 Beer's on me next time, really appreciate it!

Still not sure on the outer seal, my current one isn't doing anything with the new axle when installed, just kind of floating there. I also see the part number is different and it looks quite a bit different. So I think I'm going to give one of those a go too.

Really hope these axles are worth it, thinking I should have picked up a junkyard one at this point.

On the bright side, you and @jubei will pioneer and help document everything needed to get a 4340 chromoly axle in these trucks for the next guy that bends one. And since that might be me at some point, and appreciate all the R&D going into this endeavor. Good luck and Godspeed guys.

As I was figuring out why it wouldn't work, I was wondering how difficult it would be for a machinist to turn the small section of axle to match our newer bearings. Probably not worth, but couldn't be that difficult.

What luck? This truck is really testing me right now.

Sure hope it comes together soon.

I think they would be a direct swap on your 2000.

Seems a shame to put that shiny new axle and hub together with that nasty old drum brake.
Clean that crap up will you?

    :brianr:

Nope, going to leave it just like that.

The '01+ outer seal. I did pick up the earlier ones, and they were slightly too small to snap into the backing plate.
