I like to learn by doing.

Yes, you'll get ATF everywhere. If you want to be cleaner, you can pull the return line lower where it connects to the hard line just above the frame. That'll drain more before pulling the pump.

    1qt of ATF is enough.

Having done both the steering rack and pump three times now, albeit at different times, I'm pretty certain that it doesn't take more than 1 quart. :bananadead:

The old winch has synthetic line on it, but I might just toss it. It's too far gone.

New winch came with steel cable that I'll be removing and swapping for a new synthetic line.

Don't toss it. Use it to build a winch line extension or soft shackles depending on how much decent line if left

 I thought that was pretty obvious based on the picture of the new winch.

I'll take a look at it, but it's pretty far gone. It was several years old when I bought it, and been on my truck for another 5 years getting exposed to sun, frozen solid all winter, drug across rocks, etc.

I think I'm set with winch extensions, but a couple of soft shackles would be nice, so I'll see how it looks closer to the drum.

Should be okay depending on how much you used it. Mine by the drum has melted in a few spots from the heat.

Should be lots of good line for shackles and extensions.

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a sheet metal cover for the top of my winch that would at least keep the sun, rain, and snow off of the exposed rope on the drum.

Why not just get a winch cover?

Just because my winch is nested right underneath my grill without much in the way of clearance. I think trying to finagle a cover off of it when it needs to be used would be pretty tough without cutting more of the grill. For the time being, it isn’t an option I’m considering.

Get some cheap ABS off of Amazon or even maybe some UHMW. Thin, like 1/16'' or less really. 22 gauge perhap would be better.

You could shape something that pops in and out over the rope that has a )-----( shape too it. (in your mind trim off the tops of the () at the --- line so that its just hooks that connect to the the black bar guides over the rope).

Pop in and out pretty easy if you did it right

I think you guys over estimate the condition of this line. I honestly can't believe it hasn't broken yet. It's all frayed with broken strands all over the place.

And yes, I've used every foot of it right down to the last couple wraps.

I'll pull it and some point here and grab a few pictures.

I thought about something like that too, but my winch is much less exposed in my bumper.

That being said I've be toying with the idea of making my own bumper, which would involve raising the winch some and it would be much more exposed.

That’s a really good idea, Monte!

I think I even have some ABS left over from my fenders, and it would be super easy to form it to fit.
Yeah, your plate bumper has a lot better coverage, I’m sure.

Are you thinking new bumper and raising the winch to improve your approach angle? I think it was you who mentioned that... I’ll be curious to see what you come up with if you do decide to go for it. Just be careful getting too much distance above your frame rails. Seems like that might put a bit of a moment on the frame rather than loading it axially by having it just above it. Sounds awesome regardless!
