For out of truck nav just sync your stuff with the phone. Then you have the same maps and gps data in truck and walking. Gaia and bcn xe does this.

Ultra gauge is easy to fit in don't see the need to get rid of it.

I'd copy my phone mount and look at the mob armor tablet mount and call it a day. Not sure what your ham faceplate is but that mount I used is nice. But can't imagine you'll be doing a ton with it so up on the head liner would work. Be a paint to wire but whatever.

I tweak mine all the time but mine is easy to locate repeaters with so I try and have local stuff tuned in

Indeed. I do it mostly in case someone else needs help or it's easy for me to call for help if needed. But again, on my radio it is easy to do this. That and I run aprs on a sepersep system anyways. Two things most won't need

To call in a helicopter when someone gets hurt. Haha

My dual band is also digital and doesn't run aprs. Runs dprs but only works on digital repeaters. So there's that.

But one for aprs. One for simplex. One for monitoring local repeaters. Works good for me.

Had something like that...a Spot? That a thing?

Anyways in Utah the southern repeaters are linked together so you cover an area that is massive. Pretty much half the state. And it's free. And people are always listening. So think it would work just as good.

Well I just used that as an example. Tons of areas are like that. In Wyoming the northern ones are linked and cover half the state. Montana has a set that are linked all up I15 and you can link those into the Utah links to talk from the Canadian border to Utah.

Point is you can talk a long ways with just a ham radio...if you know what you're doing and how to do it. Can be handy. All amazing perfect solution to everything? Hell no.

I'm not that worried either, other wise I'd have one of those satellite based things. But between the radio and cellphone. Feel pretty confident if I had to do something for some one. I could. And that's all I need.

I determined the proper solution would be to spend entirely too long making a bracket, and cutting a hole in yet another piece of my truck. :cookiemonster:

It brings me an odd satisfaction to cut up perfectly good parts of my truck. Nothing like taking a die grinder to your hood, or a hole saw to your roof, or an angle grinder to everything else without a care in the world! :sawzall::D

Add some excitement. You should try a torch and cutting mounts next to a gas tank.

Not sure if this is going to be distracting enough, probably need to add a few more things on the dash.

I think that's a little too much excitement. I've welded next to the gas tank a few times, but no torches.

Yeah I'd move the ultra gauge down by the elocker switch.

Then get rid of the gps and consolidate to the tablet. Radio can go where the ultra gauge is. But I'd put the phone there.

    Agreed.

In the corner by the windshield is a cheap garmin and an ultragauge. The in the center L-R we have phone, radio faceplate, and tablet.

Garmin and UG I like having because they work all the time with no input from me. I like to have them available at a glace with no effort. And most of the time that's all I need.

Phone - I mainly just want a place out of the way where it can sit and charge while I'm driving, but it's also nice to be in view as any notifications might come in. I won't be using it for anything at this point.

Radio - just put it there and think it will work well there.

Tablet - haven't been using it, but would like to. Probably won't be there most of the time, but if I do get it figured out, will use it for offroad navigation as needed.

Then you can do that on your rig. ;)

I really don't think the GPS apps can replace the ease of the garmin.

There's a level-o-gauge by the locker switch and it's staying. The garmin and UG have been in that location for several years now and work just fine. And I just made a custom mount for the radio and think it will work perfect there.

Honestly if anything is going to get consolidated it will be the existing garmin and tablet into something like a garmin Montana. But those are expensive. I really like the idea of tablet navigation, but am disinclined to spend the effort to figure out how to work those apps, and spend the time to download all the maps and stuff before my trips. I just want something that works.

I agree with this statement! :boink::burnrubber:

But even that could be consolidated into a phone or tablet.
