    I suspect it's puking a main and/or rod bearing.

If I do buy another engine, I'll pull it apart and find out for sure.

On a positive note, finally got Gaia up and running on the tablet on this last trip. Way more intuitive than BCN. Worked perfectly the whole trip, but I do wish the roads were labeled better. Were you using their topos or a different one?

Man, bummer to hear about the engine. Hope that gets worked out reasonably easily.

Interesting to hear about your Gaia initial experience. I've been trying it out this month as well with a free trial of the Premium and feel mixed about it. Definitely more intuitive to record a track, and I love the public lands overlay; but the integration with Google Earth isn't as good (for me). Doesn't import waypoints from a KML, and doesn't maintain track colors on import. Battery usage seems high too.

Their support seems good though, they're trying to work through all this stuff with me. And of course, offline download is so much better than BCN.

    Shitty.

I use the Gaia topos and pull a few satellite overlays for areas of interest. I agree with the road labeling, best I have found is use in conjunction with the Garmin which has all the “roads” labeled. That or lay out an entire track so you are just following a pre planned route.

I've been a loyal Gaia user for years. IMO their topo's suck. I download their topo but also and more importantly the USFS 2016 and USGS Topo for offline use before a trip. It was invaluable when Rock Therapy ended in 2017 and I still had days to go explore. @NYCO emailed me his tracks for Dome Plateau and then was able to show me on my phone a route that runs behind Arches. Was seamless to import his tracks, and then create a new route to follow.

I think all maps suck on tablets. They either have old roads that don't exist or don't have roads that do exists. I thought thunderforest maps were decent until I started finding lots of roads that were not on the map. It also labels in meters.

Not sure if Gaia has caltopo but the seem to have the most detail. They just have a lot of closed roads.

If ya have premium subscription try the nat geo maps. I use 3-4 different maps and overlay them all. It builds a pretty good network of all the trails

I just couldn't easily figure out BCN and gave up. If it's not immediately obvious, I don't want to deal with. Moving Gaia to the SD card and downloading maps was so much easier.

And my use is different than yours. I have no desire to plan routes out ahead of time. I like just turning down random roads and seeing where I end up, and using the tablet, that got me to multiple dead ends and backtracking in the Sierra Madres last weekend.

Ideally I would just have paper maps for everything, but that's not practical. I find it so much better to look at a paper map than the tablet.

So many roads that don't exist any more. Not helpful when you're trying to plan a route on the fly.

I do have premium, and the Nat Geo maps are the best by far. I have piles of those Trail Illustrated maps and love them.

Issue is they don't cover everything. They have zero for WY, which is where I spent all of my last weekend.

    Ok, new plan.

Screw it, going to send it on the trip. What's the worst that can happen?

That gives me time to research stuff like Tim posted. :spy:

FYI it's a 5 lug chassis he started with, different steering rack, frame, no front axle.

back onto the Nav stuff anyone use OnX for hunting? Looks like they now have a offroad version too. I paid for it, we will see how well it works.
