Squeaky pulley?

Is there an easy way to tell which one it is?

 

When one of mine started squeaking I could tell which one it was, But I changed all of them out. I figured if one was starting the others probably weren't far behind. While I was in there I also did my water pump since I already had that much pulled apart it made it easy to get to. I have the 4.0 motor.

 

Long rod like a dowel or broom handle, stick to each pulley and listen on the other end.
Or take the belt off and turn them each by hand.

 

Use a dowel rod or long screwdriver as a stethoscope and listen to each one.

my advice, if it’s a tensioner squeaking, it’s probably time to replace em all.

I had done the water pump also about 75,000 miles ago. But I thought why not do it since I was in there and it was exposed. I also did the serpentine belt while I was doing everything else at the same time on the front end.

 

While not always 100% accurate.
Pulling the belt and spinning each by hand has given me over a 90% success rate.

 

I am about right there with you. I have not replaced a water pump it in a long time and i was on a differen car. Not how I was planing on spending my weekend. UGH!!

 

Yep, if the pulley bearings have 100K or close to it, replace them all as preventive maintenance. You may find the tensioner pulley only comes as a whole unit. The bearing itself can be replaced with a quality bearing. Febest offers a Chinese-made pulley/bearing. See rodavictoriausa for bearing replacements, for idler and tensioner bearings. Thanks for that info.. I am going to buy OEM parts. I should have all the tools. Is there anything specific you need to replace them?

You can drive with a noisy bearing for a looooong time.

 

Ya.. It just started.

 

I got most of mine through the Dealer, One I had to get through NAPA.

 

Mine started to make noise on a Monday afternoon, I did the work on a Sunday. The one pulley that was the worst was probably close to locking up. Now I don't have very good hearing so it might have been squeaking for awhile and I just didn't hear until it got worse?

 

If you are getting oem, they only sell the pulley/bearing combination, thus no special tools needed. However, Toyota does not sell it for the tensioner, but they will happily sell you the tensioner assembly. Some folks have bought it then swapped pulleys. The other options are buying just the bearing, or the Febest pulley/bearing.

Can I ask how many miles are on your truck?
And why are you replacing the water pump?
I Personally don’t consider the pump on these truck a preventative maintenance item.
I’m sure others will disagree, but I’m waiting until I have a real reason to replace mine.

 

Its an 09 with about 180ish miles.. Its in great shape, the frame was replaced would 2 years ago, cab mounts, engine mounts. Also the break lines and several other things. I am the original and the truck runs great. But I have always stayed on top of stuff like this.. I dont have to replace the water pump.. Its been done once alread but that was about 7 years ago now that I am thinking about it.

I look at it more once I get home, I noticed the pulleys making noise on my way back from lunch..
