Ok guys. I need some help. This started a couple weeks ago and I can't figure out what the hell is causing it. Threads I searched suggest the u joints need greased. Did that. Someone else said carrier bearing. I did put some grease around it but didn't jam it in ther . Should I? It's only in reverse but as you can hear it's pretty loud and annoying. Sorry for the shitty video.. was just to capture sound. Maybe I should lay my phone down under. Any suggestions appreciated.

Is it more pronounced on one side vs the other? If yes, take the wheel off and take a look. But, without being there and going off of the video, I’d say you have a bad u-joint.

Shit. I just changed the rear brakes a few days ago thinking it was them. So it's not them. Everything cleaned out in there. It probably is the u joints. Was hoping the grease would cure the squealing.

    U Joints!!!

I had an identical sound and only in reverse as you have found. I attempted to grease them but it was too late. Pulled the drive shaft and replaced all 3 U joints on the main drive shaft and solved the problem almost a year ago. My center U joint was completely rusted from the inside out.

Yep. Exact same damn sound. Well ...guess I'll be dealing with that in the near future.

    Thanks

By the way. How much of a pain in the ass is it to change out? I've never done one before. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but that's new territory for me.

U-joints aren’t too hard to do. Have a vice? I use two sockets - one slightly smaller to fit in the yoke, one larger than the U-joint cap. Use the vice as a press. Finish set with a ball pein hammer on the socket.

Thanks. I'll probably give it a shot. I'm sure there's a ton of YouTube videos on it too. I got nothing but time. :pout:

    Old thread revival!

It was the U joints just to confirm. I finally got around to changing them last month. After I posted this I greased the shit out of them and squealing went away. I figured I gave myself a little time before I had to deal. Well last month the u joint shit hit the fan. I was getting pretty bad vibrations and knew it was time.

I replaced all 3 u joints and the carrier bearing. The carrier bearing was the easiest part, which I thought would be the hardest. I did not enjoy this job. LOL. And don't want to do it again anytime soon. I had to buy a 4th u joint when one of those stupid needle bearings slipped out of place and after pressing the cap on and realizing it's not going tight to the joint, I knew exactly what happened. Then came the extremely difficult job of getting it back out because both caps installed and not enough room to come back out... :ballchain: :bananadead:

Anyway, I'm glad it's done with and glad I did it myself. Sorry , but only pic I took was the drive shaft out... and my baby just turned over to 100,000 a few weeks ago! She's still so young!

Cool that you revived this thread and brought it to closure (annoys me when OPs never follow back up to their threads). Had this exact same squealing issue on my '08 a few years back. Fortunately it was covered under an extended warranty by Toyota, sparing me the time & aggravation you mentioned. Glad you got it resolved.

I replaced the u-joints on my '06 about 18 months ago. The stockers lasted about 135K. One was rusted and pretty much toast. The others were OK but I replaced them anyway. No more squeak in reverse.

my 06 only squeals when its raining or it's rained hard and stopped and I back him down the long driveway...not sure why, probably brake pads wet? Doesn't do it in dry weather.
