    Hello All.

In doing research for some various repairs I want to DIY, I occasional encounter this process of "staking a nut".

Does using a powered impact wrench eliminate need for staking the nut? What is the point of staking in the first place?

Staking a nut is a way of preventing it from vibrating loose. You should never use an impact wrench to snug down fasteners/nuts.

This isn't the 'right' way to do things, but when removing a staked nut, a high power impact wrench does eliminate the need to un-stake the nut. The impact will just zip it off.
The 'right' way would be to unstake the nut before removal.

During reassembly though, you should not be using an impact wrench, you should get it snug and then switch to a torque wrench, and then re-stake the nut to prevent it from coming loose.

I dont think tacoma has any staked nuts, typically Toyota just uses on the car axle nuts. Tacoma uses cotter pins.

Tight and torqued is all that matters, stake only when needed.

I can think of a few staked nuts on a 1st gen tacoma- the first (and probably the one that the OP is asking about) that comes to mind is in the drive shaft to hold the carrier bearing on.

    This.

Also, staked nuts are technically only single use items

How do you unstake? Isn't staking just banging the thing with a punch and a mallet?
