This happens every time I cut the ignition off. The bendix doesn't actually engage the fly wheel, the starter motor just spools up. Has anyone else dealt with this issue or heard of it happening?

Your truck does not want to stop driving around. It's feelings are hurt.

    jk -

That does not sound right. I would have that checked out.

Haha... I'm thinking that it must be an electrical problem.

Are you sure what you are experiencing is not the emissions system doing it's thing? You do know that your truck will make THAT noise every time you shut it off. That might sound like the starter to you. Check out those threads, you'd be surprised by how many wonder what that sound is...

Thx I'll check that out. I previously owned a '08 taco and never noticed it.

I don't think it started happening until 2012.

After reading a few threads I can see now that this is very common. Sounds like it's the emissions pump doing its thing. Thanks for the advice!

The Denso starters used in these trucks will not spin the motor without first engaging the drive pinion with the ring gear. They do not use a bendix, but rather a mechanical lever from the solenoid to the starter drive, so if the drive does not engage, the solenoid contacts will not close the circuit to power the starter motor.

All this to confirm that it is not the starter you are hearing.

The air pump only runs for 10-20 seconds during cold startup, and at no other time. If this noise happens after running the truck for longer, it's not the air pump.

See threads linked above. Noise is after shutting truck off.

I did. One of them mentions that the noise only happens when moving the truck in their driveway (i.e. starting engine and shutting it down a few seconds later). In that case the noise is the air pump because it was running when when the engine was shut off. The other two dont give specifics on how long the engine was run before shut down and hearing the noise. I was just trying to say that, unless you hear the noise when you're starting cold and shutting down a few seconds later, it can't be the air pump as it only runs for 10-20 seconds after a cold start and at no other time.
