Did anyone address what is the most common way these 2nd gens are broken into? It seems each vehicle has its ways that thieves can easily break into them. I know my one of my first gens easily had the lock cylinder punched out. I know theft deterants can be worked around and all that, but I'm just trying to learn what are the most typical ways these are typically broken into?

    Wow...so helpful

I'm asking for things that are specific to 2nd gen tacomas...Not any vehicle with windows.

Specific things don't matter when a simple rock trumps all.

Except that its not, because we aren't talking about somebody who wants to be careful. We are talking about somebody who wants to be FAST.

I prefer the razor blades under the door handles. This way you also get their DNA!

I don't know if this directly applies to Tacomas but most of the 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd gen 4Runners were broken into with wire coat hangers or jiggle/bump keys. My 2nd Gen 4Runner got broken into and stolen right out front of my house and the officer who found it showed that the dumbass thief left his set of jiggle keys on the passenger floorboard.

If that's still a usable method for Tacos, it might be wise to see if you can get your locks re-keyed. I don't know exactly how possible that is.

Sucks this is still possible. Especially after the whole pickup and camry key fiasco.
He is wondering what kind of damage they will do next. As vehicles without a chipped keys will still lock the steering column.

I think the best protection is still cleverly hidden fuel cutoff switches

Whenever we have a spike in auto thefts, the police will send out a report saying ~75% of the vehicles were unlocked and had the keys accessible, or were left running.
That being said, I think installing a glass break sensor is huge. My truck had items stolen from it last year, the window was busted. Had they jimmied the door open, the alarm would have gone off. Not the case for the window, unless a glass break sensor is installed. For my '04, it was a simple plug and play installation, and some "fuck off" stickers were added, for effect. A single key tap on the window sets off the alarm now. Best $110 I've ever spent. I still hide items out of plain view though.

Thanks for those helpful responses @brah.coma @oretaco @ChadsPride
I was talking to a friend of mine who has a F350 and he was telling me how thieves typically like to punch out the lock solenoids or punch the lock mechanism from under the handle. So to prevent that, he installed rear door handles that don't have a key hole on them on his front doors. He said since then, his truck hasn't been messed with after 2 previous break-ins. I'm just interested to hear what is more common on a 2nd gen to come up with an idea of how to minimize that.

Nobody gives a damn about a car alarm anymore.
Best assurance is 2 layers: 1, fuel cutoff switch hidden out of sight
2, LoJack so you can pay the thief a visit with your 12ga. Even if I don't really want my truck back after it's been stolen/joyridden I still want punishment for the POS who stole it

I don't think that they're in high demand, it's just the mindset that you're ready just in case something does actually come up. I would much rather outfit my rig with anti-theft devices and only have my windows broken than not have any of it and have the truck stolen.

What does something like that run? Does it get a pinpoint of the truck or an overall radius of where it could be?
