I did same thing and put in about 6 normal ties since didn't have OP's handcuff sized ones. 06' base model 2wd 4cyl Tacoma 200k.

Kept putting them in until no more fit then jammed the cut off tapered ends in between where I could.

Noticed the disintegrated bushing was greasy so might take the cover off again and grease the ties where they make contact if I get off my lazy ask.

Also after getting the tapered ends of the zip ties through the narrow gap, a right angle pry tool helped lift them up to easily grab with my needle nose so I could cinch each one up.

Thank you so much Tacoma world contributors!
Was thinking worse case scenario as in replace ball joints, steering rack but no, it was a genius quick easy fix learned right here!

Why am I just learning about this zip tie fix?! My steering has been driving me nuts when driving on rocky roads. I thought the front end was falling apart. I will throw some zip ties in there and when I feel up to it order this fixed steering column and install it. Thanks TW!

I’ve heard this can be fixed by welding it solid. Why not do that. Cheap

The intermediate shaft clunking can be an indicator of bad cab mounts, if you have replaced the intermediate shaft once and it has failed shortly after, look into replacement cab mounts.

I just installed 12 tie wraps. Problem fixed! Took 30 minutes, I had to grab some needle nose pliers, more like a 20 minute fix. I wonder how long it will last? Please let me know if anyone has a report! Thank you!! IMG_0783.jpg
